Tet Nguyen Tieu is also known as Tet Thuong Nguyen. According to folk beliefs, Tet Nguyen Tieu (Thuong Nguyen) is the day of "Thien Quan Tu Phuc", which means the day when the heavenly officials bestow blessings on all mankind. Therefore, since ancient times, right after Khai Ha on the 7th of January, Vietnamese people have prepared to hold ceremonies to pray for peace, luck, blessings, and prosperity throughout the year, and at the same time hold festivals and have fun before starting the work of the new year with the hope that everything will go smoothly, as desired, and develop.

In Hoi An, after Khai Ha (January 7), people eagerly prepare for Tet Nguyen Tieu. This is a long-standing festival of Hoi An residents and has its own cultural values and characteristics compared to many places in Vietnam and Asia because it was formed on the basis of indigenous cultural traditions and cultural exchanges with China and Japan through many periods at the international trading port of Hoi An. On the occasion of Tet Nguyen Tieu, communal houses, pagodas and assembly halls all hold solemn ceremonies, hang colorful lanterns and flowers, and the atmosphere is bustling and joyful, just like the days before Tet Nguyen Dan.

The Lantern Festival has played a very important role in the cultural life of the Hoi An community from history to the present in many aspects, both satisfying spiritual needs, consolidating the community, providing entertainment and creating an environment for individuals and the community to create cultural and artistic values and preserve and promote the good traditional cultural values of the homeland.

Through the process of formation, nurturing and development, currently the Lantern Festival in Hoi An is maintained and organized periodically every year and still retains its own unique values. This is one of the major festivals at the beginning of the year of the Hoi An community, which has a great and profound impact on the cultural life of the community and is respected, preserved and actively promoted by the whole community. Thereby, contributing to enriching the cultural identity of the nation in general, of Hoi An, Quang Nam in particular.

According to the Hoi An Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation Center, in order to honor the values of the Lantern Festival in Hoi An, contributing to preserving and promoting the beauty and cultural identity of the nation, on February 2, 2023, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a decision to list the Lantern Festival in Hoi An, Quang Nam on the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, under the category of Traditional Festivals and Social and Religious Practices. The State's recognition of this heritage is a great joy, pride and honor for the people of Hoi An city, and at the same time, it also sends a message about the common responsibility of the community in preserving, transmitting and effectively promoting this national intangible cultural heritage.
