The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned of strong winds, landslides, high waves and flooding, as heavy rains will increase the risk of disasters. According to Kyodo, at 10 a.m. (local time) on August 16, near the end of Japan's Obon holiday, Typhoon Ampil was about 100 kilometers east-northeast of Hachijo Island, south of Tokyo. According to the weather agency, the storm is moving north at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. In Chiba prefecture near Tokyo, several shopping complexes were closed, including the Sogo department store.
The typhoon is expected to bring up to 300 mm of rain to the Kanto-Koshin region, which includes Tokyo, in the 24 hours from 6 a.m. on August 16. The city of Mobara in Chiba Prefecture has issued an evacuation order for about 18,500 residents.
