During the 10,000m women's race at the 32nd SEA Games, Indonesian athlete Odekita Elvina proactively offered water to Nguyen Thi Oanh, but the Vietnamese runner refused.
In the 10,000m event, athletes usually go to the water station about twice, but there are exceptions. After the first 3,000m, all athletes went to the station except Nguyen Thi Oanh. Seeing this, athlete Odekita Elvina proactively gave the cup of water she had just taken to Oanh, but the Vietnamese runner refused.
"During the race, depending on each person's needs, we will take in water differently," Oanh said after the race at Morodock Techo. "Each person also has a different distance and time to take in water, so I refused the Indonesian athlete."

Despite taking one less water stop, Oanh still ran the fastest with a time of 35 minutes 11 seconds 53. This is far behind her personal record, which is also the Vietnamese record of 33 minutes 13 seconds 23 - set at the National Championship in December 2022. However, that does not overshadow the fact that Oanh won four gold medals in the middle distance, middle long distance and long distance in the same SEA Games.
In Cambodia this year, Oanh successfully defended her gold medals in the 5,000m, 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase events that she won at the last two SEA Games. This achievement is considered rare, because Oanh has to compete with a tight schedule. She competed in the 5,000m on May 8, then the next day in the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase in just 30 minutes.
But unlike previous Games, this time Oanh was assigned an additional 10,000m. Therefore, before running and winning this afternoon, she was still worried about her unfinished mission. "I released all the worries and pressures of the past days," Oanh added about her latest victory.

The athlete born in 1995 said that despite receiving many congratulations and awards after the first three rounds, she put them aside to focus on the final distance. In addition to her personal joy, Oanh also dedicated this victory to coach Tran Van Sy - who celebrates his birthday today, May 12.
Nguyen Thi Oanh alone brought home one-third of the gold medals for Vietnamese athletics this time. With 12 gold medals after five days of competition, Vietnamese athletics did not complete the target of winning at least 14 gold medals. The overall top spot fell to Thailand - 16 gold medals after three consecutive competitions held by Vietnam.
