Airlangga Hartarto is in Washington as part of a high-level delegation to meet with his US counterparts to negotiate over a 32% tariff on Indonesian exports, which has been suspended for 90 days.
All Indonesian goods entering the US market will be subject to a 32% tariff starting July 9. The tariffs are part of US President Donald Trump’s latest move to improve Washington’s trade imbalance.
Indonesia has proposed increasing imports from the United States by up to $19 billion, including about $10 billion in energy imports, to eliminate its trade surplus and avoid tariffs threatened by the Trump administration.
"Indonesia also plans to buy agricultural products such as wheat, soybeans and soybean meal, and increase purchases of goods from the United States," Airlangga Hartarto said at a press conference.
Indonesia will also exploit key minerals and simplify procedures related to importing horticultural products from the US.
After meeting with the US Trade Representative and the Secretary of Commerce, the two countries agreed to complete negotiations within the next 60 days.
Official figures show that total Indonesia-US trade will reach nearly $38.3 billion by 2024. But Indonesia is making more money from this trade. Its total exports reached $26.3 billion last year, more than double its imports from the US (nearly $12 billion). Indonesia recorded $3.7 billion in foreign direct investment from the US in 2024.
