Colonel Huynh Ngoc Liem said that when the violating vehicle was brought to the detention house, an officer drained the gasoline to put it in storage according to procedure.
A moment later, a police officer on duty at Tanh Linh District Police Station, when returning from lunch, threw the cigarette he had just finished smoking. The wind carried the cigarette ash back into the exact spot where he was siphoning gasoline, causing a fire.
According to preliminary assessment, the fire caused about 2 billion VND in damage to the motorbike alone, not to mention the damage to nearby structures and the overhead communication lines.
After the incident, the leaders of Binh Thuan Provincial Police directed Tanh Linh District Police to carry out civil compensation for the person whose vehicle was burned in violation according to the law. Up to now, the investigation agency is also considering factors to handle according to procedural law.
Providing more information at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc - Vice Chairman of Tanh Linh District People's Committee said that the fire broke out at 6:00 p.m. on March 9, burning and damaging 232 motorbikes, 1 television and several ceiling fans in the area of the evidence garage in the district police headquarters. With the efforts of local forces and people, the fire was extinguished after 45 minutes.
Regarding this fire, Mr. Doan Anh Dung - Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People's Committee requested the Provincial Police to strictly handle the responsibilities of relevant groups and individuals. At the same time, launch a general review of ensuring fire prevention and fighting safety at district-level police headquarters, especially temporary storage facilities for evidence and vehicles, to take corrective measures, ensure safety, and prevent similar incidents from happening.
