(Dan Tri) - A woman who worked as a beggar in Bangkok (Thailand) had 1 million baht (744 million VND) in the bank and was carrying 300,000 baht (223 million VND) when she was arrested.
The Bangkok Post reported that 12 beggars, both Thai and foreign, were arrested in a police raid on December 13.
Accordingly, one woman among those arrested was carrying 300,000 baht (223 million VND) in cash and had 1 million baht (744 million VND) in her bank account.
During interrogation, this person denied that the money in the bank was from begging. She said she earned 1 million baht from selling fried bananas and insurance.

During this raid, immigration officers, Lumpini District Police (Bangkok) and other authorities went to different areas.
The campaign was launched after complaints about the proliferation of beggars on Sukhumvit Road, which tarnishes the image of Thai tourism.
Police said that of the 12 people arrested, eight were Thai, two were Cambodian, one was Laotian and one was Myanmarese. They were accused of illegal begging.
The news of the raid has attracted the attention of the Thai public. Many people are surprised at the amount of money earned from begging on the street. Some netizens said that even though they work hard every day, they do not have such a large amount of money in their bank accounts.
Mr. Varawut - Minister of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand - has asked the authorities to regularly check areas with many tourists to detect illegal beggars.

Mr. Varawut said that 30% of beggars in Thailand come from abroad. They earn a lot of money during the peak tourist season. These people earn an average of 100,000 baht/month (more than 74 million VND).
In the past 10 years, police have arrested about 7,000 beggars. After being arrested, these subjects are sent to vocational training or attend courses to earn a living.
In December 2023, Bangkok police arrested six foreign beggars. They often sat in crowded areas or famous tourist spots. Each person earned about 10,000 baht a day (7.4 million VND).
The six men said the scars on their bodies were caused by a fire. Two of them were staying at a hotel in Bangkok.
A person arrived in Thailand by air in June 2023 on a tourist visa. She then applied to study in Thailand.
