Positive signals from the market when shrimp prices are forecast to increase from now until the beginning of the first quarter of 2024 are considered a driving force to help shrimp farmers in Ha Tinh enthusiastically release shrimp for the autumn-winter crop.

At this time, in large-scale commercial shrimp farming areas of Nghi Xuan district, many enterprises, cooperatives and shrimp farmers have begun to renovate their pond systems to stock new crops. Mr. Ho Quang Dung - Technical Director of Xuan Thanh Aquaculture Cooperative (Xuan Pho commune, Nghi Xuan) said: "By monitoring signals from the market, after many months of sharp decline, the price of raw whiteleg shrimp in the southern provinces has now started to increase again, positively affecting the market nationwide. Therefore, the cooperative is still bold in investing in stocking more than 5 million juveniles in this farming season".

Shrimp pond owners in Nghi Xuan district check their pond systems to stock new crops.

According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghi Xuan district, the area for raising shrimp in the autumn-winter crop in the locality is expected to reach nearly 40 hectares, mainly concentrated in sandy farming areas such as Cuong Gian, Co Dam, Xuan Pho... because these areas avoid floods and ensure the conditions of facilities, technology, and pond systems that allow for high-intensity farming.

In Ky Anh, to "stimulate" people to invest heavily in intensive shrimp farming, since 2021, the District People's Council has issued Resolution 105/NQ-HDND, which supports cement dam construction (from 50 - 100 million VND/model), creating great motivation for the 2023 autumn-winter farming season.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Muu (Ky Thu commune, Ky Anh district) shared: “Currently, the preparation of seed sources and food is ready. I am waiting for the water source to be treated and then release 100,000 seeds on an area of over 1 hectare. Thanks to the district's support in investing and improving infrastructure, many households in the Ngon Rao farming area have boldly released seeds this fall-winter crop with the hope of a favorable year-end market and high selling prices.”

Improving infrastructure of shrimp farming area in Ky Thu commune (Ky Anh district).

To ensure avoidance of natural disasters and adverse weather effects in the autumn-winter crop, the application of advanced techniques and high technology is increasingly of interest to shrimp farmers in Ha Tinh. Many new processes and technologies in shrimp farming such as: biofloc process, multi-stage farming, circulating filtration technology farming, farming in closed houses, farming in floating round tanks... combined with investment in upgrading infrastructure can yield from 20 - 40 tons/ha/crop, 2 - 3 times higher than intensive shrimp farming in tarpaulin-lined earthen ponds, the production value per unit area is increasingly applied and expanded by people.

Mr. Duong Quoc Khanh - a shrimp farmer in Dong Ghe area (Ha Tinh city) said: "Implementing 3-phase shrimp farming, using microbiological technology and circulating water filtration in a round covered tank allows shrimp to grow well in the autumn - winter crop. We plan to continue releasing about 400,000 - 700,000 juveniles after this harvest (about 50 days from now) to be able to sell in the first months of next year, meeting market demand."

The 3-stage shrimp farming model, applying microbiological technology and circulating water filtration of Mr. Duong Quoc Khanh (Ha Tinh City) limits the impact of the environment on shrimp.

According to shrimp farmers, after a period of facing a gloomy situation, Vietnam's shrimp export activities are gradually recovering with the number of orders from importers increasing again. In addition, large-value contracts have also been signed, mainly from importers such as the United States, Japan, the EU, China, Korea..., helping the market to flourish again.

Currently, there are 3 positive factors pushing up selling prices in the coming time: inventory in import markets decreases due to cooling inflation; demand for orders increases to serve the year-end festival season; world supply decreases when countries such as Ecuador, Malaysia, etc. finish harvesting the main shrimp crop.

According to Mr. Luu Quang Can - Deputy Head of Ha Tinh Fisheries Sub-Department, the whole province currently has more than 500 - 600 hectares of area eligible for autumn - winter farming. Through the survey, farmers are quite bold in investing in this crop because the export market is showing many signs of improvement, shrimp prices are increasing. However, because the farming season usually starts from the end of August to February of the following year, facing many unfavorable factors, high risks due to complex changes in weather, unusual rain and floods, the industry recommends that large-scale farming should only be carried out in intensive farming areas on sand, flood-avoidant areas, with good infrastructure, and proactively enhancing the application of science and technology.

At the same time, farmers must pay attention to the quality and origin of the shrimp; release shrimp in the pond to reach a safe size before releasing them into the natural environment; raise the shrimp at a lower density than in the spring-summer crop; ensure environmental management measures and protect farmed shrimp and auxiliary works during floods.
