Together with the police officers of Dai Lanh commune, Dai Loc district, we went to the resettlement area for people displaced by landslides in Ha Duc Dong village to visit Mr. Nguyen Tan Du. In a solidly built level-four house, while pouring a cup of tea to invite guests, Mr. Du shared that the house his family is living in was supported by the Dai Loc district police to build in 2017. "Having this house is truly my family's dream. Thanks to settling down, I have more motivation to work hard to stabilize my family life and take care of my 2 children's education," Mr. Du confided.
Police officers of Dai Lanh commune, Dai Loc district visited and talked with Mr. Nguyen Tan Du.
Recalling his past mistakes after a “tea and wine” session that led to his imprisonment, Mr. Du said that he had paid a very high price – a life sentence. During his sentence at An Diem Prison, he tried to comply with the prison’s regulations and was allowed to attend a construction worker training class.
After nearly 15 years of serving his sentence, in 2013, on the occasion of National Day, his name was on the list of pardoned prisoners. After being released from prison, still feeling guilty about the mistakes he had made, he followed his friends to Laos to work as a construction worker. But after being in Laos for about 5 months, partly because he missed his old mother who was still struggling in his hometown, and partly because of the will to rebuild his life on his homeland, he returned to Dai Lanh commune, Dai Loc district.
In the early days of returning to his hometown, Mr. Du worked as a construction worker for several contractors; when he had no more work in his hometown, he traveled to Da Nang to look for construction sites... A memorable turning point in his life on the journey of reintegrating into the community was in early 2017, through the introduction of friends, he met and became husband and wife with a woman in Dai Dong commune, Dai Loc district.
After getting married, Mr. Du and his wife returned to the landslide resettlement land that the local government had given to his mother to build a small house. Since getting married, he has worked even harder to take care of his family. And by the middle of that year, Dai Loc District Police had reviewed the cases of released prisoners in the district to support the construction of houses. After a thorough review, Dai Loc District Police selected and supported the entire cost of building a house for him. Mr. Du's joy of having a new house was multiplied when at the end of 2017, his wife gave birth to a healthy son.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Du has overcome his guilt, tried to develop his family's economy, and built a new life.
“My wife and I are very grateful to the Dai Loc District Police and Dai Lanh Commune Police, not only for supporting my family to build a spacious house, the police force also regularly visits and encourages me so that I no longer feel inferior and self-conscious, and soon integrate into the community and build a new life,” Mr. Du confided. After the first son, in 2019, his wife gave birth to another very chubby son. Now, as Mr. Du confided, he only hopes to be healthy to take care of his wife and two sons so that they can study properly. “My wife works as a worker for an incense factory in Dai Dong Commune, and I am still attached to the construction profession that I was trained in while serving my sentence in prison. For me, I am very happy now. I hope that I and my family are always healthy and my children study hard, and I am very satisfied,” he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Van Viet, Chief of Dai Lanh Commune Police, said that currently, there are 43 people in the commune who have completed their prison sentences and returned to their locality. And Mr. Du is one of the released prisoners who have complied with local regulations. In order to support and help people who have made mistakes reintegrate into the community, implement the plan of Dai Loc District People's Committee on implementing "Management, education, and assistance to people who have made mistakes" in the period of 2021-2025 in the district and the guiding documents of the criminal enforcement agency of the District Police, Dai Lanh Commune Police have advised the Party Committee and the Commune People's Committee to launch the model "Management, education, and assistance to people who have made mistakes" to mobilize local authorities at all levels to join in coordinating with local government leaders, especially the police force, to strengthen the management and close supervision of people who have completed their prison sentences and returned. The Party Committee and People's Committee of Dai Lanh commune have directed the standing police force to advise the Party Committee and People's Committee to thoroughly grasp and effectively implement measures for community reintegration in the locality.
In addition, Dai Lanh Commune Police also called on philanthropists and donors to help those who have completed their prison sentences and are in difficult circumstances; advised the Commune People's Committee to open legal education classes for those with criminal records, thereby helping those who have completed their prison sentences to reintegrate into the community soon, remove their inferiority complex and build a new life.
