On October 18, the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department coordinated with the Vietnam Wildlife Conservation Center (Ninh Binh province) to receive a 170 kg bear voluntarily handed over by residents of Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City.
According to Mr. L. (62 years old, living in Linh Xuan Ward, Thu Duc City), he bought the bear from a stranger more than 20 years ago. The bear was missing a hand. In 2005, Mr. L.'s family registered information about this bear with the authorities (the bear had a chip and a management file).
Every day, Mr. L's family takes care of and treats the bear like a pet.
The bear is now too big and being kept in a cage makes it uncomfortable, so Mr. L's family contacted the forest rangers to hand it over, hoping that the bear would be better cared for.
This is a black bear (female), weighing about 170 kg, with the scientific name Ursus thibetanus.
On the afternoon of October 17, after completing procedures from the authorities, the bear was put on a vehicle to be transported to the Vietnam Wildlife Conservation Center (in Ninh Binh province).
According to forest rangers, after the above case, Ho Chi Minh City currently has two individuals and three organizations raising a total of 37 bears with management chips from authorities.
