On March 23, in Nghe An province, a workshop was held to summarize the project “Sustainable and comprehensive development of clam and bamboo value chains in Vietnam” (SCBV). The project was invested with a value of 4.3 million Euros funded by the European Union to be implemented in 5 provinces: Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh and Ben Tre.

The project is implemented by Oxfam in Vietnam in collaboration with the Center for Non-Timber Forest Products Research (under the Forestry Science Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the Center for International Cooperation on Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries (under the Vietnam Fisheries Association), and the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI).

150 delegates from production groups, cooperatives and processing - export enterprises in the clam and bamboo industry in 5 provinces: Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre and Tra Vinh attended the workshop to share successes and experiences.

According to the assessment, in 2018, when the project started, about 1.5 million small-scale producers in Vietnam had income from clam and bamboo production and processing, but faced many difficulties and challenges. Bamboo raw material areas were depleted due to degradation, overexploitation and lack of care. Clam beds in the three provinces of Tra Vinh, Tien Giang and Ben Tre were shrinking and tended to be distributed further from the shore.

A notable success is that the project participants have been granted international certificates for clams and bamboo to act as passports to major export markets such as the US, Japan, Europe, Japan, etc. and thereby helping to preserve sustainable clam and bamboo raw material areas, minimizing environmental and social impacts.
