Farmers in Thuong Loc commune, Can Loc district (Ha Tinh province) are currently growing Manh Tong bamboo for bamboo shoots. Manh Tong bamboo trees are growing well and are starting to harvest the first batches of bamboo shoots. Manh Tong bamboo is easy to grow and care for, has high economic value, opening up prospects for economic development for local people.

Farmers grow "super bamboo shoots"
Bamboo is a type of tree grown for bamboo shoots, used as food, a clean vegetable widely used domestically and exported. Bamboo shoots can be eaten fresh and processed into many other products such as canned bamboo shoots, pickled bamboo shoots, dried bamboo shoots, sliced bamboo shoots, and shredded bamboo shoots.

With the desire to develop new plant varieties in the locality, the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Can Loc district has cooperated with Que Lam Group Joint Stock Company to implement a pilot model of growing Manh Tong bamboo for bamboo shoots.
After completing the planning, land improvement, seed sources, production costs, labor... In July 2022, on an area of more than 2 hectares of abandoned highland rice fields, ineffective rice cultivation in Son Binh village, Thuong Loc commune, more than 1,600 Manh Tong bamboo shoots were planted experimentally with a total investment of nearly 300 million VND.

To ensure that bamboo grows well and creates quality products, meeting the problem of linking and consuming products later. The model has applied the organic growing process, using entirely composted manure and organic microbial fertilizers provided by Que Lam Group Joint Stock Company.
Mr. Phan Dinh Thang - an officer of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Plants and Livestock in Can Loc district said: "Manh Tong bamboo is an easy-to-grow variety, but to optimize productivity and quality, planting and care must strictly follow a number of technical processes.

For bamboo shoots to grow well and produce high yields, when making planting beds, it is necessary to ensure appropriate density, each row is 5m apart, the distance between trees is 3m to create ventilation for bamboo photosynthesis. To promote the process of creating bamboo shoots, it is necessary to make trenches between rows to retain water in the dry season as well as drain water in the rainy season, helping to maintain appropriate humidity for the new plants to absorb nutrients well.
Low cost, no output worries
Regular care of the Bamboo Tree is also very important. During the growth and development of the tree, after each harvest, the grower needs to prune old, diseased, and flowering trees to concentrate nutrients on new trees. Each Bamboo Tree bush should only have 3-5 healthy trees.
Loosen the soil around the base to cut off old roots, creating conditions for new roots to develop. At the same time, fertilizing with organic fertilizer 2-3 times a year will provide all the necessary nutrients, helping the bamboo shoots grow evenly and healthily.

During the bamboo shoot harvesting stage, growers need to pay attention to the appropriate harvesting time to ensure the quality of the bamboo shoots. When the bamboo shoots emerge from the ground (about 30-35 days), is the most suitable harvesting time, at this time the bamboo shoots are not too old, not too young, and the nutritional content is at its highest.
After nearly 3 years of planting, Manh Tong bamboo has taken root and grown well on the barren land of Thuong Loc commune, and is starting to be harvested. This crop is known as the "super bamboo shoot" variety due to its ability to create large biomass. If well cared for, the exploitation period can last 10 - 15 years. Bamboo shoots are usually harvested in 2 seasons, the favorable season from April to October (alternatively), and the unfavorable season from November to March of the following year. Each bamboo shoot weighs about 2-3kg, each bush has an average yield of about 1 quintal of bamboo shoots.

"During this period, we are focusing on monitoring and selecting healthy and beautiful bamboo shoots to keep as mother plants. At the same time, we are pruning and removing weak and old plants, focusing nutrients on the remaining plants, creating bamboo shoots with the highest yield and quality.
Initial results show that the organic bamboo growing model in Thuong Loc commune has been successful and is eligible for replication in the coming time," Mr. Nguyen Manh Thang revealed.

Currently, on the market, the price of Manh Tong bamboo shoots ranges from 10 - 20 thousand VND/kg of fresh bamboo shoots (depending on the time). In addition, this type of bamboo shoots is often processed into pickled bamboo shoots, dried bamboo shoots... to increase economic efficiency. According to calculations, on average, each hectare of bamboo shoots can generate an income of about 100 million VND/year. In addition, when Manh Tong bamboo trees are about 3 years old, they can be grafted to make seedlings, meeting the seed source requirements of farmers.
Talking to PV Dan Viet, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dieu - Chairman of Thuong Loc Commune People's Committee said: "Since planting Manh Tong bamboo, the tree has grown well, proving that this is a tree variety suitable for local soil and climate conditions, with prospects for economic development, especially opening up a new production direction for barren, infertile lands. In the coming time, the locality will encourage people to come and learn, replicate the model, and gradually diversify crops to contribute to increasing people's income."
