It was a sad day, when my husband and I were preparing to have our last dinner before the divorce. The dim lights of the restaurant reflected the loneliness of each of us in this marriage. We thought that this would be the end of a family, but unexpectedly, at the last minute, the situation completely changed because of a phone call.
The day before the divorce, my husband and I made an appointment to have a farewell dinner at a familiar restaurant. The space and the food were the same, the flavors were familiar, but the laughter was gone. The whole meal was silent, my heart filled with regret. At the end of the meal, my husband paid the bill, and I sat at the table waiting.
At this moment, the cell phone on his desk rang. I glanced at the screen and saw that it was from my mother-in-law. Thinking that he would have trouble with her because of the divorce, I picked up the phone instead.
“Mom,” I tried to keep my voice calm.
"Tieu Man, where are you now?", mother's voice was a bit urgent.
"We're at a restaurant and will be done soon," I replied.
"It's like this, something suddenly happened at home. Can you and Quang Di come home quickly?", the mother-in-law's voice was full of worry.
I was so confused. My mother-in-law's house was a 2 hour drive away from where we lived, there must be something really wrong at home. I finally agreed. After hanging up the phone, I quickly told my husband. He hesitated but still decided to come home with me.
When we got home, we found my mother-in-law sitting on the sofa in the living room, her face pale, with a package next to her. When she saw us return, she quickly stood up and handed the package to her husband.
“What is this?” my husband asked suspiciously.
"This is the key to the honeymoon room that I prepared for you when you were getting married. But after getting married, you immediately moved to the city. Since then, you have never stayed at home. Over the years, I know you have been running around trying to make a living, and have never stayed there. I hope you will return to that honeymoon room once again," the mother-in-law said, her voice slightly pleading.
Looking at the key in front of us, my husband and I were stunned. At that moment, I realized that we had argued and asked for a divorce because of our egos, but we had ignored the importance of this family. Entering the honeymoon room that day, everything was still the same, the happy wedding photo, the furniture was still intact. We suddenly remembered the reason we came together, the happy memories we had… So why did everything come to this point of breaking up?
"Mom, we were wrong. You've been worried a lot all this time," I couldn't help but cry and hug my mother-in-law tightly.
"Yes mom, we understand now. We will definitely live well from now on," my husband's eyes were red, he hugged both mom and me.
After that evening, my husband and I spent time talking about everything that had happened. We understood each other and our relationship better. We gave up the idea of divorce and started over. Although life was still difficult, we learned to cherish each other and build our family with all our hearts.
