From July 1, Russia will take over from South Korea the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a month, with the main topics of discussion being solutions to conflicts in the Middle East, a new global security equation, and the UN's cooperation with regional organizations.
The UNSC is the permanent body of the United Nations, primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The presidency of the UNSC rotates monthly among the 15 member states of the UNSC.
In an interview with the press, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that Russia has planned three important events during its tenure as President of the Security Council.
One of these events is an open debate on multilateral cooperation to build a more just, democratic and sustainable world order. Specifically, at the meeting scheduled for July 16, Russia will present a new global “security equation”. An open debate on the topic of resolving the situation in the Middle East is scheduled for July 17. Both meetings on July 16 and 17 are expected to be chaired by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Another important event during Russia's presidency month is the UNSC debate on cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, scheduled for July 19.
Russia last held the presidency of the UN Security Council in February 2022. Relations between the US and Russia were strained after the conflict between Russia and Ukraine erupted at the time and have continued to this day. The US has banned hundreds of Russian citizens from entering the country, including Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It is unclear whether Washington will issue visas to Lavrov and the Russian delegation.
