Ministry of Health asks 3 provinces and cities to clarify the case of 6 tourists in critical condition due to suspected alcohol poisoning

The Ministry of Health has requested three localities, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang and Ninh Thuan, to urgently coordinate to clarify the cause and strictly handle the case of six tourists suspected of being poisoned after drinking a type of fruit-infused wine.

On April 1, a source of SGGP Newspaper said that the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) sent an official dispatch to the Department of Food Safety of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Health of Ninh Thuan and Tien Giang provinces regarding the investigation and handling of the case of 6 tourists suspected of being poisoned after drinking a fruit-infused wine produced in Tien Giang province.

Specifically, the Food Safety Department received information about 6 tourists in Ninh Thuan being treated at Cho Ray Hospital for suspected methanol poisoning due to drinking a fruit wine branded KT produced in Tien Giang province.

The Food Safety Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Department to coordinate with the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to direct the treatment unit to focus all resources on actively treating the patients, not to affect their health and lives; investigate the patient's eating history, collect test results, and hospital treatment to send to the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health for coordination.

Ninh Thuan Provincial Department of Health investigates food establishments related to the suspected meals of patients to provide information and coordinates with Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health to diagnose the cause of food poisoning; coordinates with local authorities to investigate, detect and strictly handle violations of food safety according to regulations (if any) and publicizes the results to promptly warn the community.

Tien Giang Provincial Department of Health coordinates with the Department of Food Safety of Ho Chi Minh City and the Department of Health of Ninh Thuan Province in diagnosing the cause of food poisoning; coordinates with the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang Province and local authorities to trace the origin, immediately stop the circulation of alcohol products suspected of causing poisoning in the above incident, detect and strictly handle violations of food safety according to regulations (if any).

As reported by SGGP Newspaper, on March 31, Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City received 6 patients suspected of alcohol poisoning, transferred from Can Giuoc Regional General Hospital (Long An).

According to medical history, this group of patients resides in Tien Giang and traveled to Ninh Thuan. On the evening of March 29, they drank 6 bottles of KT brand fruit wine (produced in Tien Giang), each bottle was 500ml.

About 6 hours later, all of them started to have symptoms of digestive disorders, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, but at first they thought it was just a normal hangover. By 3:00 p.m. on March 30, on the way back to Tien Giang, the symptoms became more and more severe. In particular, patient PNQK (25 years old) showed signs of drowsiness and loss of consciousness.

The group was immediately taken to the emergency room at Can Giuoc Regional General Hospital. Doctors administered IV fluids and resuscitated the critically ill patients and transferred them to the Tropical Diseases Department, Cho Ray Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City.
