On May 9, Russia held a grand military parade to celebrate the 78th anniversary of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War.
It is expected that more than 10,000 servicemen from various branches of the Russian army will participate in the event. In addition, there will be more than 125 pieces of military equipment and weapons, including weapons that have been modernized according to the requirements of the special military operation in Ukraine.
Specifically, these weapons include new versions of the T-90M and T-72 B3 tanks, the Z-STS Akhmat and AMN-590951 Spartak armored vehicles, as well as a new version of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA).
Since this is an odd-numbered year, Russia has not invited many foreign leaders to attend. The Kremlin said on May 8 that the presidents and prime ministers of seven former Soviet states have been invited to attend the parade.
The ceremony is expected to begin with a speech by Russian President Vladimir Putin, before moving on to the military parade.
As many major Russian news outlets have been shut down on major global media platforms such as YouTube, live coverage of the event has been largely limited to Russian media and television.
This year, Russia has mobilized more than 20,000 security personnel, police and national guards to ensure the event runs smoothly. Security has been heightened following an attack by explosive-laden drones on the Kremlin last week.
