On October 14, the Russian Defense Ministry said its forces had taken control of the village of Levadne, located nearly 110 kilometers east of the city of Zaporizhzhia, and had taken better positions in the area.
Ukrainian officials have yet to comment on Russia’s capture of Levadne. They had previously noted that Russia was amassing troops there and was conducting localized attacks late last week.
The village of Levadne, in the Zaporizhzhia region, was captured by Russian troops at the outset of the conflict in 2022, but was retaken by Ukraine in a counteroffensive in the summer of 2023.
Ukrainian officials are keen to show the West that they are not giving up the fight against their much stronger rival. An incursion into Russia's Kursk border region has brought Ukrainian troops into Russian territory for more than two months.
The Ukrainian army is also trying to stop Ukraine's advances on the eastern front, especially in the Donetsk region. However, Russia has made significant progress recently, continuously controlling strategic enemy positions.
