The exercise will be “very dramatic” and show that NATO territory is a political “red line,” US and German officials said. The exercise is designed to simulate a response to an attack on a NATO member state.

The Air Defender 2023 exercise is scheduled to begin next Monday, involving 10,000 people and 250 aircraft from 25 countries.
The exercise is designed to simulate a response to an attack on a NATO member state. The US will send 100 aircraft and 2,000 personnel to participate in the exercise.
“We will be ready to defend every centimeter of NATO territory,” said German Air Force Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz.
US Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann said the exercise would be an "impressive" show of force to other countries around the world.
“The exercise will be impressive to anyone watching,” the US official told reporters in Berlin. “This will clearly demonstrate the flexibility and agility of the NATO ally.”
The exercise will have only a minor impact on civilian air traffic, Mr. Gerhartz said at a news conference on Wednesday.
However, the German air traffic control union GdF has argued that the exercises could have a "major impact".
