(NLDO) - According to NASA, X- and C-like shapes appear at unexpected times in the Earth's upper atmosphere.
NASA's GOLD mission to measure density and temperature in Earth's thermosphere and ionosphere has accidentally discovered mysterious characters that they describe as appearing "at unexpected times, in some surprising places".
However, it was not an alien message.

The ionosphere is the uppermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere, which becomes electrically charged during the day when sunlight hits it. This creates bands of plasma containing charged particles, which are further influenced by the Earth's magnetic field.
Previous studies have shown that merging plasma peaks can form an X-shape following solar storms and large plasma eruptions.
However, data in the new study, led by ionospheric physicist Fazlul Laskar from the University of Colorado (USA), shows that they can also form during "quiet periods", when geomagnetic conditions become more stable and calm.
This means that other elements exist that contribute to carving these mysterious shapes into the sky - often X- or C-shaped.
The C-shaped plasma storms, meanwhile, formed quite close together – just 634 km apart – suggesting that more local factors were involved, perhaps wind shear, tornadoes or something else.
Currently, only two mysterious Cs have been recognized by NASA.
According to the article published in the scientific journal The Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, more research is needed to determine the nature of these mysterious X and C characters.
They are essentially plasma bubbles, though.
Plasma in the ionosphere is essential for radio waves to travel long distances, so discoveries in this area help us better understand how radio and GPS work, improve Earth's telecommunications infrastructure, and improve space weather forecasting.
