The regulation of only considering admission to grade 6 is expected to reduce pressure on students, however, schools are still concerned that it will be difficult to recruit students who meet the requirements.
From February 14, Circular No. 30/2024/TT-BGDDT promulgating the regulations on junior high school and high school admissions of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) officially took effect with many new points.
Regarding grade 6 admission, the circular stipulates that the admission method applied uniformly in all localities is selection. The selection criteria are specifically guided by the Department of Education and Training, ensuring that the selection process is fair, objective, transparent, and appropriate to the actual situation in the locality.
Regarding the process, the Chairman of the District People's Committee approves the junior high school enrollment plan, including: Subjects, quotas, enrollment areas; enrollment criteria; enrollment time.
The news about the elimination of entrance exams for grade 6 from 2025 has not only attracted public attention, especially families with children who are about to finish primary school. This has also caused concerns among high-quality schools and private schools, who believe that if they only consider admission, it will be difficult to recruit students who meet the requirements, while the number of students registering for admission is often many times higher than the quota.
According to Le Minh Nguyet, Principal of Le Loi Secondary School (Ha Dong District), the school's annual enrollment target is 250 students, but the number of applications is often 10 times higher (about more than 2,500 applications).
A few years ago, the school used the selection method but could not maintain it because it was ineffective and inappropriate. Therefore, the school has implemented the selection method combined with testing and assessment to recruit 6th grade students.
Accordingly, each student will take a 40-minute combined test to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in three subjects: Math, Literature and Foreign Language. However, not all students who register for admission to the school take the test. The school's admissions committee reviews and checks 100% of the application files and only allows qualified students to take the test. On average, only about 600 students out of a total of more than 2,500 applications are qualified.
The principal of Le Loi Secondary School proposed to continue applying the admission method with student capacity testing in the 2025-2026 school year.
Hanoi currently has 5 public secondary schools recognized by the City People's Committee as high-quality schools, including: Nam Tu Liem (Nam Tu Liem district), Thanh Xuan (Thanh Xuan district), Cau Giay (Cau Giay district), Le Loi (Ha Dong district), Chu Van An (Long Bien district).
In recent years, these schools have been allowed to choose the admission method of either selection or selection combined with testing and assessment of capacity. The district People's Committee approves the admission method of the schools.
In Nam Tu Liem district, in addition to a number of high-quality secondary schools, there are also many private inter-level schools. The head of the Department of Education and Training of Nam Tu Liem district said that in recent years, these schools have applied a combination of examination and assessment to recruit 6th grade students, not entrance exams.
According to records, some famous non-public schools in Hanoi have announced the admission schedule for grade 6 such as: Newton Secondary and High School, Doan Thi Diem Secondary School, Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary and High School - Cau Giay, Luong The Vinh School... The schools enroll students by considering transcripts combined with capacity assessment tests.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the admission method will continue to be applied to public secondary schools in the 2025-2026 school year. The Department is urgently developing a plan to enroll students in the first grades, including grade 6 for the 2025-2026 school year. After being approved by the City People's Committee, the Department will widely announce it as a basis for units and schools to organize enrollment in accordance with regulations.
Regarding the concerns of parents and schools about eliminating entrance exams for grade 6 from 2025, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Training, said that Circular No. 30/TT-BGDDT stipulates that the Departments of Education and Training must develop a set of admission criteria applicable to all schools; at the same time, there are separate criteria for schools that, after implementing admission according to general criteria, still have more students meeting the requirements than the school's assigned quota.
Individual criteria are not only requirements in the application documents but also need to directly evaluate students in many different forms such as: questions and answers, writing, presentations, practice, experiments, academic records, products, student activities or tests, assessing student capacity.
