US gives Ukraine more strength to deal with Russia

The US government on December 30 announced nearly $6 billion in military aid and additional budget for Ukraine, while Russia was accused of continuing to attack Ukraine.


The Ukrainian Air Force accused Russia of launching 43 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into Ukraine on the night of December 29 and early morning of December 30, according to The Kyiv Independent news site.

The Ukrainian Air Force claimed to have shot down 21 UAVs in the Kharkiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, Odessa, Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk provinces, but lost track of 22.

Debris from the downed UAV damaged several civilian homes in Kharkiv and Odessa, according to The Kyiv Independent .

On December 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of escalating its air attack on Ukraine, launching more than 280 KAB guided bombs, nearly 370 attack UAVs and more than 80 missiles in the past week.

In addition, Mr. Serhii Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, on December 30 accused Russia of launching more than 1,300 UAVs and more than 250 missiles of various types into the capital Kyiv in 2024, according to The Kyiv Independent .

Russia claims to have shot down four HIMARS rockets

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on December 30 that its forces had taken control of the Novoolenovka settlement in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, according to TASS news agency.

The Russian Defense Ministry also announced that Russian air defense systems shot down four rockets of the US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and 65 drones of the Ukrainian armed forces in 24 hours.

Also within 24 hours, the Ukrainian armed forces in the area under the responsibility of Russia's Western Operational Group lost more than 530 servicemen, 1 tank, 1 infantry fighting vehicle and 4 armored personnel carriers, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The Russian Defense Ministry also confirmed that the Ukrainian army lost 420 soldiers, 2 tanks, 2 infantry fighting vehicles and 1 armored personnel carrier in the area under the responsibility of the Russian Central Operations Group.

It is impossible to confirm the figures on losses given by both sides. Ukraine has not commented on the information from the Russian Defense Ministry.

Russia is under attack again?

Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov of Russia's Belgorod region wrote on the Telegram messaging app on December 30 that Ukrainian armed forces attacked settlements in the Belgorod region with more than 30 rounds of ammunition and 20 drones in one day, according to TASS news agency.

According to Mr. Gladkov, the attack also injured one person and damaged two houses.

Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on December 30 that in 24 hours, Ukrainian armed forces in Russia's Kursk province lost more than 310 soldiers, along with an infantry fighting vehicle, 10 armored fighting vehicles and 1 artillery piece.

Also according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, in military operations in the Kursk direction since August 6, 2024, Ukraine has lost more than 45,530 servicemen, 262 tanks, 204 infantry fighting vehicles, 142 armored personnel carriers, 1,359 armored fighting vehicles, 337 artillery pieces and 42 multiple rocket launchers.

US announces nearly $6 billion in military aid, budget support for Ukraine

The US government on December 30 announced nearly $6 billion in additional military and budget aid for Ukraine as President Joe Biden used the final weeks of his term to boost aid to Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to Reuters.

Specifically, President Biden announced $2.5 billion in additional security aid to Ukraine. Later, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced that the US had provided $3.4 billion in additional budget aid to Ukraine, providing the conflict-torn country with important resources amid Russia's increased attacks, according to Reuters.

Earlier this month, the US Treasury Department transferred $20 billion of a $50 billion G7 loan to a World Bank-backed fund for Ukraine, backed by profits from frozen Russian sovereign assets.

UK, France discuss possibility of sending troops to Ukraine

Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko announced on December 30 that the ministry had received $41.7 billion in international aid by 2024. Mr. Marchenko said international aid had helped Ukraine ensure full social payments amid a significant increase in defense spending, according to The Kyiv Independent .
