In the first leg, Quincy Hall - bronze medalist in the 400m - gave the US an early lead before passing the baton to Vernon Norwood - who finished fourth behind his teammate in the 400m. Halfway through the race, the US held a big advantage with the remaining teams competing fiercely for second place.
Justin Robinson helped maintain the US lead in the third run, while France overtook Britain to take second place ahead of Jamaica and Botswana.
Rai Benjamin - who won bronze in the 400m hurdles - increased his advantage in the final leg and helped the US to gold in 2:57.31. Bronze went to France - the team of Ludvy Vaillant, Gilles Biron, David Sombe, Teo Andant - with a national record of 2:58.45. England with Alex Haydock-Wilson, Charles Dobson, Lewis Davey, Rio Mitcham won bronze in 2:58.71.
"I didn't feel like I was the fastest, but I'm happy that my teammates helped me get the lead," Benjamin said. "After the 400m hurdles, I wanted to come back and run the last part of the relay. It meant a lot to me to have the trust of my teammates."
USA won the men's 4x400m Budapest 2023.
This is the ninth gold medal for the US in the men's 4x400m in the last ten events. At Budapest 2023 alone, the US won four relay gold medals . Before yesterday's 4x400m, the US won the men's 4x100 with Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, Brandon Carnes, Noah Lyles (37.38 seconds) and the women's 4x100m with Tamari Davis, Twanisha Terry, Gabrielle Thomas, Sha'Carri Richardson (41.3 seconds). The US also broke the 4x400m medley world record with a time of 3 minutes 8.80 seconds.
In total, the United States topped the Budapest 2023 medal tally with a whopping 12 gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals . Following were Canada with four gold, two silver, Spain with four gold, one silver, Jamaica with three gold, five silver, four bronze and Kenya with three gold, three silver and four bronze.
In the women's 4x400m event, the Netherlands exploded in the sprint to win gold. From third place in the final 20m, Femke Bol of the Netherlands overtook Stacey Ann Williams of Jamaica and Nicole Yeargin of Great Britain to finish first in 3:20.72. Jamaica came in second in 3:20.88, while Great Britain took bronze in 3:21.4.
This is a contrast to the 4x400m medley relay final on August 19, when Bol fell just before the finish line, causing the Dutch team to receive a "DNF" (did not finish) result, meaning they did not complete the race. Bol won his second gold medal at Budapest 2023, after winning the 400m hurdles in 51.70 seconds.
