The US government announced on January 14 that it had finalized a regulation that essentially bans Chinese technology from cars on the US market, according to AFP.
The regulation, which also involves Russian technology, comes as outgoing US President Joe Biden ends efforts to increase restrictions on China.
US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo speaks at an event in Washington DC on October 29, 2024.
“Today’s cars are more than just steel on wheels, they are computers,” said US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, noting that modern vehicles contain cameras and other technology that is connected to the internet.
“This is a targeted approach to ensure we don’t put Chinese and Russian-made technology on American roads,” Raimondo stressed.
The new rule currently only applies to passenger vehicles weighing less than 4.5 tons, the Commerce Department said. However, it plans to issue separate rules targeting the technology in commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses “in the near future.”
Currently, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has a facility in the US state of California that produces buses and other vehicles.
“China is trying to dominate the future of the auto industry,” said Lael Brainard, director of the US National Economic Council. She also said that connected cars contain software and hardware systems linked to foreign competitors that could lead to misuse of sensitive data or interference.
Under the latest rules, announced on January 14, even if passenger cars are made in the United States, manufacturers with “sufficient connections” to China or Russia will not be allowed to sell new vehicles with the hardware and software to connect to the outside world and drive autonomously. The sales ban goes into effect for the 2027 model year.
The new restrictions also ban the import of hardware and software linked to Beijing or Moscow. The software restrictions will apply to the 2027 model year, while the hardware controls will apply to the 2030 model year, AFP reported.
There is currently no information about the reaction of China or Russia to the new regulation mentioned above.
