RT and Express reported that the incident occurred on October 12 outside the Trump rally in Coachella, California. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office announced on October 13 that Vem Miller, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, was arrested at a checkpoint outside the rally with an illegally owned handgun, a loaded pistol and a large capacity magazine. According to Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco, Miller presented a fake VIP and press pass at the checkpoint. "They were different enough to cause alarm. We probably prevented another assassination." Mr. Bianco described Miller as a "sovereign citizen," meaning a group of radical libertarians who believe the government cannot exercise legitimate power over them. Miller, a registered Republican who holds a master's degree from the University of California and is running for the Nevada state assembly in 2022, did not confirm or deny that he intended to assassinate Mr. Trump. Bianco added that the suspect was released on $5,000 bail and is due to appear in court in January 2025 on a charge of illegal possession of a weapon. Mr. Trump has faced two assassination attempts in the past three months. The former president and Republican presidential candidate narrowly escaped death at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July when a bullet grazed his ear. The gunman, who was hiding on a rooftop near the rally, shot and killed one person and wounded two others before being shot dead. The second assassination attempt took place at Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September. A gunman who aimed at the former president from behind bushes was apprehended by Secret Service agents after fleeing the scene. The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was arrested. Over the weekend, US President Joe Biden said he had ordered the Secret Service to protect Trump as if he were a sitting president and provide him with any security assistance the Trump campaign requested.
