Ca Mau After drinking alcohol used to make vinegar at home, one person died and three others were hospitalized. Doctors diagnosed industrial alcohol poisoning.

On June 10, a representative of Ca Mau General Hospital said that they had just received three cases of alcohol poisoning (aged 33-53) related to industrial alcohol (Methanol). The patients are currently in critical condition and are being treated at the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department.

According to the family, four days ago, four people organized a drinking party at a house in Tan Dien B hamlet, Thanh Tung commune. The type of wine used was vinegar (rice wine) brewed two months ago. After drinking, all of them had headaches, fatigue, and vomiting. Among them, the 69-year-old man slept lethargically, so his family took him to the commune health station for examination and medicine, but due to his increasingly serious condition, he died on the morning of June 9. The remaining three people are on ventilators and dialysis at Ca Mau General Hospital.

Methanol, also known as industrial alcohol, has many uses such as making paint and solvents. However, this substance is very toxic to the body and is absolutely not used as food alcohol like ethanol.

Alcohol poisoning from ethanol is usually milder, with symptoms similar to drunkenness. Meanwhile, alcohol poisoning from methanol is usually more severe, due to industrial alcohol being mixed into the drink. People with methanol poisoning who are hospitalized late may suffer from metabolic acidosis, multiple organ damage, and even death.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning usually appear 1-2 days after drinking. Signs include urinary retention, persistent headache, increasing fatigue, lethargy or agitation, and loss of alertness. In particular, patients have signs of visual disturbances very early, often seeing white clouds like mist in front of them.

Doctor Ma Nhon Khiem, Head of the Intensive Care and Anti-Poison Department, said that since the beginning of the year, this place has received more than 10 cases of severe alcohol poisoning, with some deaths. Therefore, people need to use alcohol of clear origin, do not arbitrarily mix alcohol into wine, and are encouraged not to drink too much wine or beer.
