“Ending the war in Gaza and preventing the conflict from spreading in the region is an absolute and urgent priority,” Mr. Turk stressed, while demanding that Israel comply with the decisions of the United Nations Security Council as well as the International Court of Justice.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries also issued a joint statement demanding that Israel immediately stop military operations in the Gaza Strip, strongly criticizing human rights violations there.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar also called for a ceasefire as soon as possible.

However, according to Channel 12, there is “great pessimism” among Israeli negotiators. The US plan to present a new proposal in the next two or three days is now considered impossible.

Washington is reluctant to make new proposals unless/until it sees signs of progress. It is urging other mediators, Qatar and Egypt, to find out where “Hamas’s limits” lie.

Channel 12 also commented that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement on September 2 about continuing to maintain Israeli military control over the Philadelphia corridor along the Gaza Strip-Egypt border, a stance that was not clearly stated in the proposal in May, "buried" the chance of reaching an agreement.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is currently facing criticism from both domestic and international sources for failing to reach a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement with the Palestinian Hamas force.

US President Joe Biden said that Mr. Netanyahu “did not do enough” to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Israel is also internally unhappy with the current government’s efforts to rescue hostages.

However, the Israeli Prime Minister announced on September 8 that the country will make every effort to achieve the goals of the military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking at the regular session of the Israeli Government, Prime Minister Netanyahu emphasized that the task of the country's authorities is to continue the fight to eliminate Hamas; bring back all hostages, ensure that the Gaza Strip never becomes a threat to Israel again, as well as bring people in the North and South back home safely.
