Mbappe misses 10 points after 14-0 win

VnExpressVnExpress20/11/2023

France Scoring three goals and assisting three others, Kylian Mbappe was only given a 9 rating by L'Équipe, after France's 14-0 win over Gibraltar in Euro 2024 qualifying.

L'Équipe praised Mbappe's two hat-tricks of goals and a hat-trick of assists, but only gave the French captain a score of 9, one point lower than the absolute score.

L'Équipe is notoriously picky when it comes to grading players. Since starting in 1946, the French newspaper has only given perfect scores to 15 different players 17 times. Messi has received two 10s, after scoring four goals for Barca in a 4-1 win over Arsenal in 2010 and five in a 7-1 win over Leverkusen in 2012. Erling Haaland has also received two 10s after Man City beat Man Utd 6-3 in 2022 and Leipzig 7-0 in 2023. Meanwhile, Mbappe received one 10 after France beat Kazakhstan 8-0 in 2021.

France's 14-0 win over Gibraltar on the evening of November 18 was the biggest win in Euro qualifying history, surpassing the old record of Germany's 13-0 win over San Marino in 2006. Mbappe scored his first goal against Gibraltar, increasing the score to 4-0 from the penalty spot. Later in the match, he scored two more goals, including a 40-meter lob.

Mbappe has scored 300 goals in his career. The 24-year-old striker reached this milestone earlier than both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Mbappe also took France's tally to 46 goals, surpassing Antoine Griezmann to move into third place. Olivier Giroud leads the way with 56 goals, while former striker Thierry Henry is second with 51. Giroud also scored twice in the record win over Gibraltar.

Also in the win over the 198th ranked team, 17-year-old midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery became the youngest player ever to start for France. The PSG star made his mark by scoring to make it 3-0.

After the record win, France continued to lead Group B with a perfect 21 points. They secured one of the top five seeds for the finals, although they still have a final match against Greece on November 21.

17 times L'Equipe gave 10 points to 15 different players:
