In addition, there has been a lot of false and misleading information about storm prevention and recovery, especially rumors about dike breaks and power outages, causing anxiety among the people.
Many localities proactively handle fake news
At the regular September press conference of the Ministry of Information and Communications on the afternoon of September 13, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information, Ministry of Information and Communications, said that to eliminate this situation, the Ministry of Information and Communications and many localities across the country have been implementing strong solutions to handle subjects spreading fake news, spreading false rumors, ensuring a safe and clean network environment.
Currently, the Ministry of Information and Communications is maintaining the operation of the Fake News Processing Center. This is a place that specializes in receiving and processing false information.
Not only at the central level, 9 localities across the country have established specialized units to handle fake news. In recent times, this unit has made an important contribution to coordinating with local authorities to issue warnings and refute false information to reassure public opinion.
According to the Deputy Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information, during the recent storm No. 3, a series of fake news about dike and dam failures and power outages in Hanoi appeared on social media platforms. However, thanks to the proactiveness of ministries, branches and local electronic information portals, much of the false information was quickly refuted.

For example, Quang Ninh quickly dealt with fake news about the recovery of 16 bodies in Cam Pha, which caused great panic among the people. Hai Duong province also dealt with 21 cases of spreading fake news about the flood situation.
Bac Ninh, Bac Giang and Hai Phong have dealt with many cases of spreading false rumors about dike breaches. Phu Tho has also taken strong action against those spreading false news about the Yen Lap dike breach and flooding in Ha Hoa.
The image of a mother holding her child sitting on a basin in Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang has been identified as fake news. After verification by local authorities, the results showed that this was fake news, staged by a YouTuber.
Or another video clip about a baby crying and losing its mother in Ha Giang has been verified as false information. The relevant subjects have been summoned for handling, and the information has been made public for people to know.
People need to be careful not to be lured into spreading fake news.
The above incidents show that whenever natural disasters or epidemics occur, fake news tends to spread quickly, making people easily get carried away by emotions and share unverified information.

In recent times, the Ministry of Information and Communications has coordinated with cross-border social networking platforms such as Facebook and TikTok to prevent and remove false information.
Facebook has removed 36 news articles containing false information related to storms and floods, while TikTok has blocked 51 accounts posting distorted information about the disaster prevention situation.
The website tingia.gov.vn of the Fake News Processing Center has received 45 cases of fake news and transferred them to the authorities for investigation and handling.
Faced with the current situation of fake news, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen, Deputy Director of the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information, recommended: “People need to be vigilant and seek information through official media or local authorities. Otherwise, we may unwittingly become the ones spreading fake news, violating the law without knowing it.”
Beware of fraudulent charity appeals for profit
Previously, the Information Security Department also warned people when participating in cyberspace to be vigilant against fraudulent forms of charity calls for profit and providing false information related to storm No. 3, also known as storm Yagi.

According to the Information Security Department, in recent days, taking advantage of the impact of Typhoon Yagi, there have been cases of fraudulent charity calls for profit and false information related to this typhoon on the internet.
Specifically, taking advantage of the concern, sympathy and sharing of many people across the country with compatriots in provinces and cities heavily affected by storm Yagi, a number of fake fanpages were created to call for charitable support.
In terms of tricks, the scammers created fake accounts of government agencies or reputable organizations to provide false information about the storm and flood situation in the northern provinces, thereby calling for donations and support for families affected by natural disasters.
Fraudsters even use images and information similar to official sites to call on kind-hearted people to donate and transfer money to personal accounts to appropriate money.
In addition, in recent days, some social media users have reported being scammed out of charity money donated to people affected by natural disasters.
Faced with the widespread appearance of online scams and the dissemination of false information related to Typhoon Yagi, the Information Security Department advises people to be vigilant and not to send donations or support to affected people to accounts of unknown origin.
When receiving information online calling for donations or selling goods for storm and flood prevention, people need to carefully verify the content; at the same time, follow the official media to know the reputable organizations and addresses receiving money and goods to support people in localities severely affected by Typhoon Yagi and the floods after the storm.
People should not transfer money to individuals or organizations without clear identities; only make donations through official accounts of state agencies or reputable organizations and individuals. In case users do not have clear information, they can consult with relatives or agencies.
The Information Security Department also recommends that people carefully check information before sharing and improve their ability to protect themselves from false information; only follow information pages from the government and reputable press agencies to update accurate news, thereby limiting the risks of online fraud or becoming victims of bad actors online.
