Liverpool draw with Brighton despite Salah's double

Liverpool took the lead thanks to two goals from Mohamed Salah, but were held to a 2-2 draw by hosts Brighton in round 8 of the Premier League on October 8.

Salah continued to show his talent when facing Brighton, directly participating in 14 goals in 13 matches against this opponent in the Premier League. The Egyptian star's double in the first half helped Liverpool get closer to victory, but the visitors' defense could not protect the result in the second half. The 2-2 draw did not satisfy any team. Liverpool have not won against Brighton in four consecutive matches, while the home team also extended their streak of draws and losses to four.

Liverpool visited the Amex Stadium in the hope of improving their ranking at the top, in a round where Arsenal and Man City faced off directly. However, the ambitions of Jurgen Klopp's team were soon doused with cold water, when Alexis Mac Allister made a mistake on the day of the reunion with his old team. The Liverpool midfielder waited for the ball from goalkeeper Alisson, allowing Simon Adingra to win it and quickly finish into the near corner to open the scoring for Brighton.

Brighton have been poor in recent games but have been on fire every time they face Liverpool. The excitement of taking the lead helped them create more chances in the first half, but they all missed them. Among those who failed to score was teenager Carlos Baleba, who was starting for the first time in the Premier League.

It was no coincidence that Brighton had conceded 20 goals in all competitions this season before playing Liverpool. The home team's already shaky defense made two consecutive mistakes at the end of the half, causing the lead to reverse. In the 40th minute, Lewis Dunk's cross-field pass was misplaced, allowing the visitors to steal the ball and launch a quick counter-attack. Darwin Nunez made his fifth assist since arriving in the Premier League, all to Salah. A big part of Liverpool's equalizer was Harvey Elliott, whose delicate dropkick left the Egyptian wide open.

Just five minutes later, another poor pass cost Brighton again. 22-year-old goalkeeper Bart Verbuggen was overconfident and lost concentration, passing to Pascal Gross in the penalty area. The Brighton midfielder lost possession and was forced to foul Szoboszlai. From the resulting penalty, Salah scored his eighth Premier League goal against Brighton. Along with Man Utd, this is Salah's favourite opponent in the league, having been involved in 14 of Liverpool's goals against them.

The visitors had plenty of chances to decide the game in the second half, but they squandered them. The most blameworthy was substitute Ryan Gravenberch, who hit the crossbar from close range with no one marking him. Liverpool were then levelled in the 78th minute when Lewis Dunk made amends by tapping home Solly March's free kick.

Klopp and his team almost lost when Joao Pedro shot the ball over the bar in the penalty area at the end of the match. The German strategist drew two and lost two of his four matches against his colleague Roberto De Zerbi. This is the first coach in the Premier League that Klopp could not defeat in his first four encounters in all competitions.

Liverpool missed the chance to enter the top 3 with a 2-2 draw. They are currently in fourth place with 17 points, three points behind leaders Tottenham and Arsenal, and one point behind Man City. Brighton is in sixth place with 16 points. In the next round, Liverpool will return home to host Everton while Brighton will play away at Man City.
