Climb to Bach Ma peak to see vanilla orchids and rhododendrons in bloom

Bach Ma National Park has a total natural area of ​​over 37,400 hectares, located in the two provinces of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Nam. Bach Ma peak is 1,444m above sea level, with majestic natural scenery, green all year round, with waterfalls, poetic streams... Spring is the time when many endemic plants in this forest compete to bloom, especially rhododendrons, Vanilla Schenzenica orchids... In recent days, hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists have visited Bach Ma National Park. According to Mr. Nguyen Vu Linh, Director of Bach Ma National Park, since the beginning of 2024, the number of tourists coming to the Park has increased significantly, especially foreign visitors. As the person who discovered the Bach Ma begonia in 2016, when she was a senior student in Hue, Master Pham Thi Thanh Dat (wearing glasses standing in the middle of the photo) was also the person who announced the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid discovered on the top of this mountain. Ms. Dat said that the reason for naming it Vanilla Schenzenica was because China had previously discovered and announced this flower species. This species has only been recorded in Hong Kong, Guangdong (China) and Bach Ma National Park. This time, Ms. Dat returned here to pollinate the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid (Photo: Vi Thao).

According to Master Dat, Vanilla Schenzenica orchid is a species of orchid belonging to the genus Vanilla, orchid family. The stem is a vine, 7-8mm in diameter, with many leaves with thick elliptical blades. The flower usually blooms in spring, around February-March every year, the flower has a mild fragrance, light yellow color, has 5 secondary petals on the outside and 1 main petal in the shape of a ovary. In 2023, the Vanilla Schenzenica orchid was discovered on the path leading down to Do Quyen waterfall and had 15 fruits after pollination, of which the longest fruit was 19cm in size (Photo: Vi Thao).

One of the most notable and abundant flowers on Bach Ma peak is the rhododendron. This flower only blooms once in the spring. In addition to the common red rhododendron species that is widely distributed from the core zone to the buffer zone of this National Park, on the mountain top there are also rare rhododendron species such as white bell rhododendron with pink spots, white bell rhododendron, rhododendron sim, etc. (Photo: Vi Thao - Vu Linh).

Along with forest protection, biological development, welcoming visitors, ... Bach Ma National Park is also assigned the task of preserving biodiversity, rescuing rare and endangered animals. Mr. Nguyen Vu Linh said that in November 2023, the Vietnam Bear Rescue Project at Bach Ma National Park was inaugurated and put into use. This center has currently received and humanely cared for 6 bears. On February 26, Bach Ma National Park released into the wild a rare white pheasant belonging to group IB, the number in the wild is not much, the risk of inbreeding as well as the diversity of gene sources is not high.
