Hien Luong - the gentle river at the 17th parallel in Vinh Linh district (Quang Tri) during the resistance war against the US to save the country was the front line of the socialist North, the direct rear of the great front line in the South, and this was the hottest and fiercest battlefield when the US imperialists and their lackeys carried out a war of destruction with hundreds of thousands of tons of bombs, toxic chemicals, and vicious war strategies to turn Quang Tri into a "White Belt".

With strong will, courage and steadfast faith in the Party and the Revolution, overcoming all the pain, loss and devastation of the war, the army and people of Quang Tri were resilient, indomitable, and bravely held their ground to fight the enemy with the determination "Not an inch gone, not a millimeter left".
During the war years, the flag on the Hien Luong flagpole at the border bridgehead still flew proudly, becoming the belief and unifying will of the people of the two regions, the North and the South. That belief and will turned into great strength for the army and people of Quang Tri and the whole country to stand together, overcome countless difficulties and hardships, fight bravely, sacrifice, and achieve glorious feats; shining the light of revolutionary heroism, known to the whole country and friends around the world as a symbol of conscience and human dignity...
Desire for peace
With the will, determination and strength of a heroic nation, our army and people smashed the entire neo-colonial government system of the US imperialists. At exactly 11:30 a.m. on April 30, 1975, the victory flag of the Liberation Army flew on the roof of the Independence Palace, gloriously ending the resistance war against the US, saving the country full of sacrifices and hardships of our people.
This victory is the greatest achievement of the national liberation struggle led by our Party and President Ho Chi Minh; it is the victory of the strength of great national unity; of the aspiration for peace, independence, freedom and national unification; of the peace-loving conscience of humanity in the world.
