December 25: Electoral votes must be sent to the librarian and president of the Senate, a position currently held by Vice President Kamala Harris, by this date.
January 6, 2025: Vice President Harris will preside over the Electoral College vote count in a joint session of Congress, announce the results, and declare the winner.
Previously on January 6, 2021, then-President Donald Trump criticized Vice President Mike Pence for refusing to try to stop Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's victory. This led to the attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters. However, Biden's victory was confirmed early the next morning.
Since that event, the US Congress has passed a number of important reforms, including requiring the approval of at least one-fifth of the members of the House and Senate to consider any election result complaints from the states, instead of just the support of one member from each house as before.
January 20: President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will be sworn into office in a ceremony scheduled to begin at 12 noon ET (00:00 January 21 Vietnam time).
