On the afternoon of June 30 (local time), the plane carrying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife Le Thi Bich Tran and the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation landed at Seoongnam Military Airport (Seoul, South Korea). The head of the Vietnamese government and his wife are on an official visit to South Korea at the invitation of his counterpart Han Duck Soo and his wife.
Welcoming Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the airport were Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises and Startups Oh Young Joo; Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Choi Yong Sam; Director of the Protocol Department, Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs Seo Won Sam and Commander-in-Chief of Seongnam Military Airport.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to South Korea is the first official visit to South Korea by a senior Vietnamese leader since the two countries upgraded their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Vietnam and South Korea established diplomatic relations in late 1992 and became Comprehensive Strategic Partners in 2022.
The official welcoming ceremony for Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife took place at Seongnam Military Airport. This is the first time Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has officially visited South Korea. The visit took place exactly one year after South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's state visit to Vietnam in June 2023.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the President of South Korea has visited Vietnam 10 times; the Prime Minister of South Korea has visited Vietnam 3 times and the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea has visited Vietnam 11 times.
Meanwhile, on the Vietnamese side, the General Secretary visited Korea 3 times; the President visited 3 times, the Vietnamese Prime Minister visited 7 times, and the National Assembly Chairman visited 6 times.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stood on the podium as the Vietnamese national anthem played.
In an interview about Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit and the relationship between the two countries, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo hoped that this visit would be an opportunity to further strengthen political trust and deepen strategic cooperation between South Korea and Vietnam, as leading cooperative partners in the region.
South Korea remains the number one investor in Vietnam, while Vietnam has become one of South Korea’s three most important trading partners. The two countries are aiming to reach a turnover of 150 billion USD by 2030.
During his first official visit to Korea, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh is expected to have more than 30 activities.
In addition to official programs with senior Korean leaders, the Prime Minister will attend and speak at three forums, including the Business Forum, the Tourism Promotion and Cultural Cooperation Forum, the Vietnam - Korea Labor Forum; and two seminars, including a seminar with leaders of Korean economic organizations and a seminar with Korean intellectuals and scientists on semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Overseas Vietnamese and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Korea welcomed Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife Le Thi Bich Tran.
This afternoon, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife will visit the Embassy, meet with embassy staff and the Vietnamese community in Korea.
The Vietnamese community living and working in Korea is more than 250,000 people.
In economic cooperation, the two countries have become each other's leading important partners. Korea continues to maintain its position as Vietnam's number 1 partner in terms of direct investment; number 2 in terms of development cooperation (ODA) and tourism; and number 3 in terms of labor and trade.
