After many months of careful care, more than 2,400 Xa Doai orange trees with golden hearts on the farm of Mr. Truong Van Bien (residing in Dong Thanh commune, Yen Thanh, Nghe An) have begun to ripen and be harvested.

This year, Mr. Bien’s orange farm only yielded over 50 tons of fruit, a decrease of 20 tons compared to previous years. Partly because the orange trees did not bear fruit. Partly because this year’s crop of oranges fell a lot.

“This year the orange tree looks very strange. Normally it only flowers once, but this year it has flowered twice but not many fruits. When taking care of the oranges, they start to grow and then fall off. From the 7th, 8th and 9th lunar months, oranges fall off in large numbers, it’s heartbreaking to see,” said Mr. Bien. The main reason for the oranges falling off is the climate, frost, and the rest is insects and pests.

When he saw the oranges falling, Mr. Bien started to investigate in the garden and discovered that the cold spell had come early and there was frost. With more than ten years of experience growing oranges, Mr. Bien quickly installed an irrigation system to wash the orange trees. At the same time, he took care of them and added nutrients to the soil.

After applying the measures, the orange trees in the garden stopped dropping fruit and grew steadily again. “Luckily, I discovered it early and handled it promptly, so the fruit drop was reduced. In the commune, many farms lost fruit in large quantities, and some households lost everything with this orange crop,” said Mr. Bien.

In addition to applying the "secret" to prevent oranges from falling, Mr. Bien also invented a liquid to repel insects such as butterflies, fruit flies and other harmful insects to orange trees.

To repel harmful insects, Mr. Bien brews two biological preparations. One is made from galangal, ginger, garlic, hot peppers and vinegar to spray to repel insects and spiders. The other is made from freshwater fish mixed with honey and fermented for 6 months. When the oranges bear fruit, Mr. Bien uses his own biological preparations and sprays them on the orange trees. The other is put in plastic bottles hung on tree branches to repel insects.

With his own secrets and biological products, Mr. Bien's orange garden is now full of fruit, with scattered harvests from now until the Lunar New Year.

Every day, Mr. Bien hires 2-3 people to harvest and sell to customers, averaging 1-2 quintals of oranges per day.

With a selling price of 35-45 thousand VND/kg, it is expected that with 50 tons of oranges, Mr. Bien will have a profit of more than 1 billion VND after deducting all expenses.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Ngo Van Tuan - Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Thanh Commune (Yen Thanh District, Nghe An) said that the whole commune currently has 128 hectares of oranges. Of which, 70 hectares have been harvested, with an output of nearly 1,000 tons per year. This year, many orange gardens in the commune have experienced fruit loss, causing the total orange output of the commune to tend to decrease.

"In recent years, some orange garden owners have proactively used biological products or invested in making nets to repel insects and fruit flies instead of using chemicals. Thanks to that, the Dong Thanh orange brand is increasingly known and trusted by many customers during Tet, bringing a large source of income to the people," said the Chairman of Dong Thanh commune.
