When people respond that they have paid their electricity bill, someone will impersonate a technical staff member and call back to adjust the data on the system.

Then, they will suggest people to access fake links and apps with interfaces similar to EVN's official website. When installing these fake apps, people risk having their entire phone and bank account taken over," he shared.

On January 5, Ms. D. (in Hanoi) received a call from a person impersonating an electricity employee informing her of an electricity bill.

The subject sent Ms. D. a QR code and asked her to scan the code to pay her electricity bill. After following the subject's instructions, Ms. D. lost 500 million VND in her account, so she went to the police to report it.

Mr. Pham Van Uoc (42 years old, in Hoai Duc, Hanoi) recounted: “On January 6, I received a call from a strange phone number, they clearly stated my house number, name and asked me to pay the electricity bill, otherwise the electricity would be cut off.

Then they sent me the app and instructions for depositing money. Seeing that the app looked fake, I immediately said that I had already deposited money. About an hour later, they called me back and said that the deposit had not been successful, then cursed at me and hung up. A day later, my wife received a similar phone call.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Huong (in Nam Tu Liem) said: “At 5:28 p.m. on January 8, I received a call from the number 03351075XX. After confirming my name, the subject said that the system was reporting an error in the electricity bill payment, so my family still owed money. Realizing there were signs of fraud, I hung up and blocked the number."

To prevent fraud, Hanoi City Police advise people to be vigilant and not to pay electricity bills to bank accounts or strange links or personal accounts without verification.
