TPO - With just over a week left until the Lunar New Year 2025, people in Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower village (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) are urgently bringing flowers to the market in time to serve people preparing for Tet.
This year, for the Lunar New Year flower season, Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower village (Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) planted nearly 190,000 flower baskets of various kinds to serve the Tet market. This is a traditional flower village with a history of 100 years. |
Every Tet holiday, this flower village supplies hundreds of thousands of ornamental flower baskets to the market, bringing a stable and sustainable source of income to many households over the years. |
These days, people are busy taking care of their 'brainchildren', hoping the flowers will bloom in time for Spring. |
Since the sixth lunar month, people here have started growing flowers to serve the Lunar New Year market, in order to sell them in the twelfth lunar month. Flowers are ready to be brought to market. |
To meet the needs of customers, flower gardens are always updating and testing new flower varieties, in order to constantly diversify the types and attract buyers. The main types of flowers grown include marigolds, chrysanthemums, lisianthus, and nightshades. |
To have beautiful chrysanthemum fields that bloom just in time for Tet, growers must be meticulous in every step, from planting, watering, fertilizing, staking, pruning buds to disease prevention. At the same time, they must also regularly monitor the weather to apply technical measures to help the plants grow well and bloom at the right time. |
According to some flower growers, this year's unfavorable weather has caused considerable damage to flowers. Ms. Kieu, a flower grower here, said that this year she planted more than 1,000 flower pots, including purple raspberry chrysanthemums, large chrysanthemums... The selling price ranges from 200,000 VND/pair to 900,000 VND/pair, depending on the size. |

According to the Economic - Infrastructure Department of Binh Thuy District (Can Tho City), this year the area of Pho Tho - Ba Bo flower village is estimated at about 18 hectares, with more than 30 households growing flowers, and an output of about 188,600 baskets.
In terms of varieties, farmers focus on developing strong varieties such as chrysanthemums. In addition, there are also some new varieties such as Pico and multi-colored Korean chrysanthemums. The size of pots, flower plants, flower colors, and the application of lamp-fumigation techniques also diversify and enrich the flower designs.
Since the beginning of the season, the impact of erratic weather and unexpected rains has caused crops to be affected by pests, waterlogged plants, yellow leaves, and bloom early or late, causing damage of about 5-7%. However, people have promptly applied solutions and used new technical advances to limit the damage.
