That is the opinion of Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Chien Thang, Head of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, University of Science (Thai Nguyen University) with The World and Vietnam Newspaper on the occasion of the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.
Learn to adapt to change
In your opinion, what changes are taking place most strongly in society today and how do they affect the lives of young people?
The strong digitalization process is having a profound impact on all fields, creating a dynamic environment for young people with many development opportunities but also many challenges.
Young people have the ability to adapt well to modern technology, skillfully using new means to increase work efficiency and entertainment. However, they are also easily dependent on technology, which reduces independent thinking and lacks critical thinking on complex issues. At the same time, they have little real-life experience, are easily drawn into trends and depend on relationships in the virtual environment, leading to imbalance in personal life.
In addition, the development of the Internet and the globalization process gives Vietnamese youth the opportunity to access and participate in international cultural flows, connecting with friends from other countries more easily than before. However, this also leads to the risk of eroding cultural identity when foreign values infiltrate indiscriminately, fading traditional cultural values, causing young people to lack understanding of national history.
However, integration also promotes young people's awareness of global issues, encouraging them to take action for the environment, reduce plastic waste and save energy.
So what skills and qualities do young people need to equip themselves with to be able to adapt to these changes?
With the rapid changes of modern society, young people need to equip themselves with many skills and qualities to adapt and develop steadily.
First of all, it is necessary to clearly identify one's own abilities and practice solid expertise. Knowing many things is not as good as being good at one job. Only when focusing on developing strengths can young people become experts in their field, creating professionalism and breakthroughs.
In addition, the ability to adapt to social changes is an important factor. Instead of rejecting technology, learn to use it as a tool to support personal development. To do this, innovative thinking and a spirit of lifelong learning are prerequisites.
In addition to expertise, young people also need to cultivate soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, and time management. These are the keys to help them succeed and build a solid career.
In particular, young people need to have a strong will. In the current digital age, the risk of fake news and harmful information can cause many young people to be drawn into negative trends or lose their direction. Therefore, young people need the courage to filter information, maintain their stance, and not be manipulated by false ideas. Living with ideals, confidence and a strong will should become the guiding principle for young people in the new era.
So how is the responsibility of young people towards themselves, their families and society demonstrated? Can you share specific examples of responsible actions of Vietnamese youth today?
For themselves, young people need to be responsible for cultivating and training their morality, personality and lifestyle to be worthy of being a core generation in the current development of the country. Besides, they also need to be self-aware of training their own health, to be healthy to build the country.
For family, young people need to promote filial piety, care for previous generations, and maintain traditional Vietnamese family culture. Actively participate in movements to build cultural families and happy families in the locality.
For society, the responsibility of protecting and building the Fatherland must be placed first by young people. Next is to actively contribute to socio-economic development as well as community activities, helping those in difficult circumstances.
Vietnamese youth are actively contributing to the country's development, demonstrating their responsibility to society through many practical movements.
A typical example is the “Youth Pioneers in Digital Transformation” movement, which has attracted a large number of young people to apply technology to production and business. In the field of rural development, the “Youth with New Rural Areas” program has helped build roads and cultural houses, while supporting people to effectively convert crops and livestock.
In addition, the members also participate in the “Youth Volunteer Team for the Sea and Islands”, coordinating with the border guards to propagate laws and protect the marine environment. Many annual programs such as “Thousands of Good Deeds” and “Supporting the Exam Season” also bring practical values to the community, contributing to building a humane and sustainable society.

AI 'opens the door' for young people to develop new skills
How do information technology and social networks affect young people's development in accessing knowledge, changing their thinking and responding to social issues? How can young people use technology effectively and responsibly?
In the context of rapid digital transformation, information technology and social networks are creating profound impacts on the lives of young people. These digital tools not only change the way young people access knowledge, but also reshape their thinking and ways of responding to social issues.
Information technology opens the door to access to the unlimited treasure of human knowledge. Young people can self-study and improve their qualifications without being limited by space and time. In the 4.0 era, digital tools and platforms such as AI are creating conditions for young people to develop new skills. This is an opportunity for them to keep up with the world in applying advanced technology.
Social media creates a space for young people to express their views and participate in social issues. These platforms allow young people to express their awareness and responsibility in protecting sovereignty and territory and demonstrating national pride. In addition, social media is also a tool to spread positive values and typical role models for them to follow. Many volunteer and charity movements have been expanded thanks to the connecting power of social media.
Along with the positive effects, information technology and social media also bring significant challenges. Over-reliance on technology can undermine young people’s ability to think independently, turning them into passive consumers of information instead of creators.
Social media provides young people with access to cultural diversity, but also poses the risk of eroding their identity. Young people are in the process of forming their lifestyle, and if they are not selective in their absorption, they may stray from traditional moral standards. These are major challenges to building a sense of responsibility and confidence in the future of the country.
To use technology effectively, young people need to be equipped with comprehensive digital competencies, which are the basic elements to become responsible "digital citizens". In addition, they also need to develop analytical and critical thinking skills to evaluate information from multiple sources and identify misinformation.
Maintaining a balance between virtual and real life is important for holistic development. Young people need to develop a habit of using social media and technology in a controlled manner, and spend time on extracurricular activities, such as sports and socializing with the community. This balance helps them take advantage of the benefits of technology, stay connected to reality and develop healthy social relationships.
In your opinion, what role does the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation play in the development of youth and the country? How can Vietnamese youth integrate and compete in the international arena?
Entrepreneurship and innovation are becoming an important driving force for the development of young people and making a significant contribution to the progress of the country. Entrepreneurship is the way for young people to realize their dreams, develop their personal capacity and create their own values. When participating in startups, they are trained in independent thinking, problem-solving ability and the spirit of daring to think and dare to do. The entrepreneurial spirit helps the young generation become masters of technology and masters of the future.
By participating in start-up activities, young people are equipped with knowledge of business administration, marketing, finance, technology and many other fields. Through this, they not only develop themselves but also create value for the community and society. Many people have applied advances in science, technology, engineering and culture of the world to creative labor to build and develop the country.
In order to integrate and compete in the international arena, the young generation needs to equip themselves with the most important tool, which is foreign languages, because this is an important key for young people to integrate internationally. In addition, they need to equip themselves with skills such as information technology, business administration and intercultural communication skills. In addition, Vietnamese youth need to proactively learn and selectively absorb the experiences, values and quintessence of the world.
To promote the spirit of entrepreneurship, the State needs to build a comprehensive ecosystem with the participation of many stakeholders. Youth Union chapters at all levels should continue to implement solutions to support youth entrepreneurship, including promoting propaganda, organizing specialized training courses, equipping knowledge and practical skills, helping young people to be confident on the path of entrepreneurship.
At the same time, it is necessary to support resources and facilities through connecting with investors and investment funds, introducing successful startup models, and creating favorable conditions for them to access capital, opportunities and experience.
With an increasingly complex social environment, what skills do young people need to be independent and make the right decisions in life?
Lack of life skills is becoming an alarming problem, directly affecting the actions and thoughts of young people. To be independent and make the right decisions in life, young people must practice the ability to live independently, helping to increase their confidence in deciding many issues for themselves without having to depend on others. Especially, during the transition to university, which is a time to mark maturity, they need to know how to decide and take responsibility for their own actions.
One of the most obvious signs of independence in young people is the ability to take care of themselves. They can do personal tasks without the help of adults. Next, the ability to manage time, know how to plan and arrange time for studying and playing reasonably, manage their daily schedule and complete tasks on time without needing reminders from others.
Finally, decisiveness is very important, each decision marks a change in life. Therefore, young people should be bold in making choices, taking actions for their activities and have a sense of responsibility for those decisions. The results can be success or failure, each person also learns a great lesson for themselves. The lessons that young people learn and gain experience through success and failure will be a sign of maturity, helping them succeed in their future work and life.
Thank you!
