The rain has been pouring for days… In her family’s shallot field, Mrs. Phan Thi Moi (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) is busy hoeing to repair the shallot beds that were eroded by the rain. Every year, at this time, Mrs. Moi would have harvested the beds of shallots with large bulbs in a pot.

Mrs. Moi lamented: “It keeps raining, I give up! Poor shallot growers like us! The soil is wet, the bulbs don’t grow big, they just lie there. People have advertised to buy shallots for twenty or thirty thousand dong, but I have eight acres of shallots but no small bulbs to sell.”

Around the end of the 11th lunar month to the beginning of the year, Binh Phuc people enter the season of harvesting shallots. But up to now, there are many buyers, but not many sellers...

Growing 3 sao of shallots, from 6am to 11am, still on the shallots, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong (Tat Vien village, Binh Phuc commune) looked up at the sky: "I just hope the sun will save any bulbs. The leaves look so green but the bulbs are tiny, damaged by fungus. Compared to previous years, this year the price is more than 30,000 VND/kg but there are no sales. Now that Tet is here, all the bulbs, big or small, are sold out."

[VIDEO] - People in Tat Vien village are worried because their pickled onions are small and damaged by the rain:

Binh Phuc commune has 4 villages that specialize in growing shallots at the end of the year to sell for Tet, especially Thanh Ly village and Tat Vien village. More than 120 hectares of shallots are grown in the commune, sold to traders in Da Nang, Hue, Ho Chi Minh City, etc. This is the main source of income for farmers in Binh Phuc during the Tet holiday. (Mr. Phan Ngoc Bon - Chairman of Binh Phuc Commune People's Committee)

According to Mr. Bon, the impact of the storm, cold air, and prolonged heavy rains have left many farmers in Binh Phuc commune in dire straits. Most of the onions grow slowly, the tubers are small, and the prices are high but the harvest is poor. People face economic difficulties at the end of the year.

In 2025, the People's Committee of Binh Phuc commune has identified shallots as the main crop. The commune will zone off 20 hectares as the main crop, identify seed sources, invest in cultivation, ensure production organization and rural economic development according to Criterion No. 13 of advanced new rural communes in 2025.
