iPhones undergo a series of durability tests before they can hit the shelves. The process was a mystery until recently, when YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who runs the MHBHD channel, was invited by Apple to visit the specialized lab where the company tests the durability of unreleased iPhones and other products.
360 degree rotating robot checks different water jet angles
The entire process was shared by Marques Brownlee on X in multiple tweets, each highlighting different aspects of the durability tests conducted by Apple. The machines are high-tech and take into account real-world scenarios like rain, drops, etc. This means the tests not only show how strong the iPhone's integrity is, but also demonstrate how difficult it is to damage the device after years of research and development.
The company's high-tech machines can be seen in the video, which can mimic real-world usage, such as being able to rotate 360 degrees to withstand water jets aimed at the iPhone from any angle to ensure the device's water resistance is worthy of its IP rating. Likewise, dust resistance testing machines are also on display.
To make the iPhone even better at water resistance, Apple performed four different levels, including simulating splashes and rain; low-pressure jets; high-pressure jets from a fire hose; and underwater testing with increased pressure to simulate depth.
Through its testing, the iPhone's design has been continuously improved, ensuring that it is not only stronger and more durable, but also able to withstand many environmental limitations.
In addition to touring the lab, Marques Brownlee also met with hardware chief John Ternus to talk about the durability of the iPhone, adding that Apple sometimes tests more than 10,000 iPhones before releasing it to the world.
