From early morning, in all the fields of Thanh Nua, Thanh An, Pom Lot communes, people are urgently preparing the land, sowing, creating a bustling and urgent working atmosphere. With the advantage of flat terrain, available water resources, fertile land, for many years now, the movement of growing winter crops has developed widely. Realizing that sweet potatoes bring economic efficiency and a stable consumption market, in recent years, Mrs. Bui Thi Tan's family, Dong Bien 1 village, Thanh An commune has maintained the area of sweet potato cultivation. Immediately after harvesting more than 2,000m2 of winter- spring rice, Mrs. Tan's family hired more people to work the land to plant sweet potatoes in time for the season. Thanks to proper care, the family's sweet potato garden grows well every year, bringing high economic efficiency. From 1,000m2 of sweet potato fields, the family earns about 12 - 13 million VND. If calculated compared to rice cultivation on the same area, it only earns 8 - 10 million VND/crop. “Every year, in addition to the two main rice crops, the family continues to increase the winter crop area, especially sweet potatoes, to increase income and stabilize life,” Ms. Tan added.

Pom Lot Commune (Dien Bien District) aims to develop specialized vegetable growing areas. In the photo: People tending to tomato gardens.

Similar to Thanh An commune, at this time, after completing the corn harvest, in the fields of Pom Lot commune, farmers started plowing, preparing the land, and planting new vegetables. This winter crop, the commune planted 38 hectares of vegetables, focusing on vegetables such as: Cabbage; kohlrabi; cauliflower; chili... and corn. Commenting on the development direction of specialized vegetable areas. Mr. Nguyen Van Luyen, Vice Chairman of Pom Lot Commune People's Committee said: "To make vegetable growing more effective, in the coming time, the commune will continue to invest synchronously in science and technology, and cooperate with businesses to ensure output". At the same time, the Party Committee and the commune government will step up propaganda and mobilize people to take advantage of ineffective corn growing areas to switch to vegetable growing; direct cadres to guide people in choosing suitable crop varieties, implementing measures to care for and prevent pests and diseases. The highlight of the 2024 winter crop is that the crop structure continues to shift positively towards expanding the area of high-value crops, easy to consume products and produce goods according to market demand. Up to now, some early tea growing areas have been harvested such as: Chili plants with prices ranging from 40,000 VND/kg, cauliflower 40 - 45,000 VND/kg...

Thanks to the correct application of techniques, the vegetable areas are now growing and developing well. In the photo: The cabbage garden is good, ready for harvest.

This winter crop, Dien Bien district has planted over 860 hectares of vegetables (over 720 hectares of vegetables, 140 hectares of sweet potatoes), mainly concentrated in the communes of Thanh Nua, Thanh Luong, Sam Mun, Pom Lot and Thanh An... To achieve high results in winter crop production, from the beginning of the crop, local authorities have actively encouraged people to plant crops that are the strengths of each commune. Although there are still some difficulties in weather, but with accumulated experience, efforts of people and timely direction of authorities in production, the winter crop has basically completed 80% of the area so far.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Bien district, shared: In the 2024 winter-spring rice crop, Dien Bien district was heavily affected by weather, heavy rains with whirlwinds, flash floods, and landslides, causing many rice areas to be completely lost and productivity to decrease. Winter crop production is very necessary for people in the district, contributing to ensuring livelihoods, increasing income, and stabilizing life. To achieve the set goals and plans, after the end of the winter-spring rice crop, the district's professional agencies coordinated with communes to mobilize people to focus on developing winter crop production in the direction of commodities, organizing winter crop production in the direction of compact areas, according to planning to ensure convenience in purchasing and consuming products, gradually forming a concentrated winter crop production area, the Muong Thanh 3-crop field area.
