Students with a passion for programming attended the Arduino Day event held in July 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City.
The online TV consulting program Choosing a major for the future with the theme "Development opportunities with technology majors" organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of March 19 attracted the attention of many candidates. After listening to practical sharing from experts at universities, many questions related to the qualities of people working in technology such as what is needed to study well, do well in the industry... were discussed in detail.
When industry characteristics are "opposite" to personality
At the program, male student Tuan Khai (Tien Giang province) said he is an extrovert. Is this suitable for the technology industry? Answering this question, Master Pham Doan Nguyen, Vice Principal of the University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City, affirmed that in the technology field, students must be truly passionate, persistent, have logical and sharp thinking, and extroversion is just a plus.
"In addition, if you choose to study interdisciplinary fields such as digital economics or financial technology, in addition to the qualities of a technologist, candidates must also meet the requirements of the remaining fields. In reality, there are no 'hot' professions, only 'hot' personnel in those professions. It is not difficult to get into a university at the present time, the difficulty is that you have to choose a truly suitable profession," Mr. Nguyen commented.

"Before registering their wishes, candidates have three important tasks to do, which are to position themselves, position their career, and finally position the labor market," Master Nguyen added.
"Do you need to be good at English to study information technology or computer science? I see that people working in this field often sit in one place, so is it suitable for people who like to travel like me?". Answering this question, Dr. Truong Hai Bang, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Saigon International University, said that English is not a mandatory factor, but students need to improve it throughout their studies.
"Because, good English skills will bring many advantages to you. First is the ability to access more knowledge because academic documents and online resources are mainly written in English. Second is the opportunity for international communication because English is the common language in the global technology community. Finally, it increases job opportunities, because English is the common language in large corporations," Mr. Bang explained.

Dr. Bang added that many technology companies now create flexible working conditions, allowing employees to work remotely instead of having to sit in the office all day like before. This is to improve work-life balance and help increase work performance. "Therefore, traveling to Phu Quoc while working for a company in the US is no longer a strange thing," Dr. Bang commented.
I like repairing machines and equipment, what should I study?
That was the question sent to Master Duong Thanh Phet, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Mr. Phet said that in the university environment, students not only learn a profession but also have access to knowledge about economics, politics, culture, society and hard and soft skills. "This helps you easily adapt to many career opportunities in the field of the industry," Mr. Phet noted.
The male expert said that in the technology sector alone, candidates can take on many different positions, including work in the IT Helpdesk department. This is a mandatory department in today's businesses, responsible for supporting employees in using and operating technology products, "and is very suitable if you are passionate about repairing, assembling, and operating machinery and equipment".

"In general, technology industries provide training in both basic and specialized knowledge about operating technology equipment and supporting users in using technology products. However, candidates need to pay attention to cultivating many different skills and professions in university so as not to limit themselves to only one certain job, but can flexibly change in the future," Master Phet noted.
Dr. Nguyen Kim Quoc, Head of the Information Technology Department of Nguyen Tat Thanh University, received the question: "When studying information technology, will students practice at businesses or at school, and do businesses require experience?"
Responding to this issue, Mr. Quoc said that universities often connect with businesses to participate in designing training programs, so practical learning is organized at both universities and businesses. "At school, you will practice subject projects. Meanwhile, businesses are where students come to experience reality, learn specialized topics or participate in real projects," said the male expert.

Dr. Quoc also noted that depending on the size of the business, there will be different input requirements. For example, for large technology corporations, professional experience and English proficiency are the two most important criteria. For small and medium-sized enterprises or startups, adaptability and dynamism are more highly valued, while professional skills only need to meet basic requirements.
