Hanoi activates "Foreign language self-study month" in 2025

NDO - On February 20, in Hanoi, the Departmentof Education and Training organized the activation of "Foreign Language Self-Study Month" in 2025 in both direct and online forms, with the participation of more than 7,000 teachers and many students at more than 500 connection points.

This is an important activity, marking a new step forward in the innovation of foreign language teaching and learning methods, meeting the increasingly high requirements of modern education.

Speaking at the conference, Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong said: The "Foreign Language Self-Study Month" movement is one of the practical contents of the Hanoi Education and Training sector to focus on improving foreign language proficiency of students, gradually making English the second language in schools as stated in Conclusion No. 91-KL/TW dated August 12, 2024 of the Politburo to continue implementing Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW dated November 4, 2013 of the 11th Party Central Committee "on fundamental and comprehensive innovation of education and training, meeting the requirements of industrialization and modernization in the conditions of a socialist-oriented market economy and international integration".

This is a practical movement, aiming to encourage students of high schools in the city to improve their self-study ability, develop language skills, and at the same time create a vibrant, effective and creative learning environment.

The conference to activate "Foreign Language Self-Study Month" is a breakthrough solution in the management and support of students' self-study activities. This system will help schools and working groups to conveniently monitor and evaluate learning outcomes, while creating a space for students to share experiences, exchange knowledge and progress together to become "global citizens" who are good at expertise, foreign languages ​​and information technology.

Director of the Department of Education and Training Tran The Cuong emphasized that this is also an activity to effectively implement Circular No. 29 dated December 30, 2024 of the Ministry of Education and Training regulating extra teaching and learning, in order to promote the movement of self-awareness, initiative, and active learning among teachers and students; synchronously deploy solutions, in which awareness is important.

Speaking at the conference, mentioning Uncle Ho's example of self-study, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong emphasized the responsibility of each cadre, teacher and student in self-study, contributing to building a learning society, which is also implementing the goals of the 2018 General Education Program.

Appreciating the proactive and practical nature of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training in launching the "Foreign Language Self-Study Month", the Deputy Minister said that this is a necessary task because foreign languages ​​are a tool for global integration, and are also a specific solution to implement Conclusion No. 91-KL/TW on gradually making English the second language in schools.

According to Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong, self-studying foreign languages ​​in general and English in particular will help students become more confident and competent in their studies and life. Self-study does not mean being alone, self-study means determining their own goals, space, time, materials, and curriculum. Students' learning is now much more convenient when they always receive support from teachers and apply information technology, have direction, implementation, and have testing and evaluation.

The Ministry of Education and Training has developed the Law on Teachers to recognize the contributions and especially important roles of teachers. Therefore, with the "Foreign Language Self-Study Month" movement of students, the Deputy Minister hopes that each teacher will be an example of self-study, creativity, and inspire self-study for generations of students.

Previously, on January 9, the Department of Education and Training held a launching ceremony for the "Foreign Language Self-Study Month" movement for all students and teachers of educational institutions in the city with more than 1,000 teachers, principals, and managers. Since then, on the FSEL online learning platform, more than 615,000 people have registered to participate, including more than 593,000 students and nearly 22,000 teachers. Of which, the number of accounts that have completed confirmation is nearly 615,000 (100% of the number of registrations), the number of accounts that have completed and are completing the English proficiency assessment is more than 515,000, reaching nearly 84% of the number of accounts that have completed confirmation).
