The first global conference on AI, Security and Ethics 2025 (#AISE25) was held on March 27, providing a unique forum for the diplomatic mission in Geneva and a multi-stakeholder community, including academic experts, civil society organizations, industry representatives and research laboratories interested in the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) in security and defense.

In his speech to the conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed: “Artificial intelligence is profoundly reshaping the way we live, work and communicate. It can help drive progress and prosperity for all of humanity. But unregulated AI also poses unprecedented risks – from disinformation to cyberattacks to mass surveillance. Nowhere are these dangers more acute than in the military sphere. Recent conflicts have become alarming testing grounds, with AI applications challenging international humanitarian law and harming civilians.”

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Robin Geiss, Director of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) said that the conference will be held annually as an important event bringing together the diplomatic community as well as experts from the military, industry, academia, civil society and research laboratories to jointly consider and address the complex impacts of AI on national, regional and global security and resilience.

The conference was organized as part of the Roundtable on AI, Security and Ethics (RAISE) - an initiative by UNIDIR in partnership with Microsoft Corporation.

By inviting experts from diverse backgrounds and transcending geopolitical divides, RAISE intends to foster inclusive and multidisciplinary engagement by promoting open dialogue and collaboration./.
