Hoang Khac Hieu – Gen Z engineer and the technological shift

Hoang Khac Hieu - one of the typical faces of the young generation of technology engineers in Vietnam. As the head of development department 2 at the Government Solutions Center - Viettel Enterprise Solutions Corporation (Viettel Solutions), he not only contributes to creating technology solutions for state management and operation but is also an example of the spirit of continuous learning and innovation.

Born in 1996, Hoang Khac Hieu soon determined that information technology was the path to pursue in the long term. Stepping out of his "comfort zone", he embarked on large-scale projects, facing challenges to gradually assert himself.

It is his perseverance, creativity and pioneering spirit that have helped him continuously reap proud achievements: the title of "Emulation Fighter of the Whole Army" in 2024, 4 consecutive years of being recognized as an Emulation Fighter at Viettel Solutions and being one of the 10 Outstanding and Promising Young Vietnamese Faces in 2024.

But behind those titles is a journey full of effort and dedication, where a young person is not afraid of challenges to bring technology closer to life, contributing to the country's digital transformation.

From a tech-savvy boy to a Viettel engineer

Born and raised in Quang Binh, a land with a rich tradition of learning, Hoang Khac Hieu had a special passion for information technology since childhood. This passion originated from his uncle who was a technology engineer.

“My uncle was one of the first people to work in the technology field in Vietnam ,” the engineer born in 1996 proudly said.

Since childhood, Hoang Khac Hieu often followed his brother, enthusiastically observing each step of assembling and installing computer equipment. Those were not just playtimes but also the first bricks that laid the foundation for the engineer's burning passion for technology.

During his school days, the young student boldly joined the IT team. With his own diligence, Hoang Khac Hieu enrolled in the IT specialized class at Quang Binh High School for the Gifted. With the determination to pursue information technology seriously, Hieu passed the entrance exam to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, majoring in information technology.

His university years not only provided Hieu with basic knowledge but also helped him understand that to be solid in the technology industry, he needed practical experience.

From an early age, he proactively sought out internship opportunities and was fortunate to be accepted into Viettel Solutions. It was here that Hieu began a new journey, where challenges constantly trained him to become an excellent technology engineer.

Growing up from "impossible" missions

Joining Viettel Solutions in 2019, just after graduating from university, Hoang Khac Hieu had no time to hesitate or adapt slowly. Just one week after starting the job, he was assigned to participate in his first business trip, surveying customer needs and providing professional training to a group of nearly 40 employees.

“I felt really pressured at that time. But I thought this was an opportunity to learn, so I was determined to do it to the end,” Hieu recalled.

Two years later, when the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, the country fell into a state of social distancing and traffic stagnation. Viettel Solutions was tasked with developing the “Green Channel” system to ensure the smooth operation of the goods supply chain.

“We only had two weeks to build a completely new system to replace the old one. There was pressure, but at that time I simply thought: 'I cannot sit still when the country needs me'. The team worked day and night, everyone wanted to contribute their part to support the country to overcome difficult times,” Hieu shared.

As a result, the “green lane” system operated successfully, helping thousands of vehicles to travel safely during the tense pandemic. This was not only a major milestone in Hoang Khac Hieu’s career but also a testament to the sense of responsibility of the young generation of engineers facing the big problems of society.

After this project, Hieu continued to take on more important roles. He became the leader of many large-scale technology projects such as the smart traffic monitoring system in the Smart City ecosystem, deployed in more than 30 localities nationwide. Notably, the technology products developed by him and his team have conquered international markets, from Peru to Dubai.

“I still remember the feeling when I presented the demo of Viettel Solutions’ smart traffic solution at the Dubai Financial Center. Experts and customers were surprised and exclaimed: ‘I didn’t expect Vietnam to be able to make a product integrating AI and 5G like that!’ At that time, I was really proud of what the team had done,” Hieu said.

Technology cannot stand still. For Hoang Khac Hieu, innovation is the key to survival and development. During his time working at Viettel Solutions, he was the author of many initiatives that brought great value to the business.

Not only contributing with technology products, Hoang Khac Hieu is also an important factor in orienting the development of young human resources at Viettel Solutions. He is always willing to share his experiences with colleagues, inspire the next generation and constantly promote innovative ideas.

“Working in technology is a journey of continuous learning. I always keep in mind that if you want to go far, you must not be afraid of challenges or collisions. The most important thing is to maintain a progressive spirit, dare to do, dare to innovate ,” Hieu emphasized.

Besides, according to Hoang Khac Hieu, the working culture of Viettel people - a spirit of discipline, readiness and always looking towards the community - are also factors that affect his success today.

"Working at Viettel, we not only learn technological thinking but also imbue the spirit of soldiers. Discipline, readiness and especially responsibility to the community are always put first," Hieu shared.

Youth Union – Launch pad for young generation to be creative and dedicated

As a young technology engineer, Hoang Khac Hieu believes that the Youth Union plays an important role in accompanying and supporting the development of the young generation. According to him, this is not only a bridge connecting young people but can also create great opportunities for them to assert themselves.

Promoting startups and innovation is the first thing that Hoang Khac Hieu wants the Youth Union to promote. He believes that there should be systematic programs and mechanisms to build a startup ecosystem specifically for young people.

"The Youth Union can completely coordinate with ministries, departments, branches and technology enterprises to create creative spaces and provide financial and technical support for young people with startup ideas," Hieu emphasized.

In addition, training and connecting high-quality human resources is also an important task. Hieu believes that, in the context of rapid technological development, the Youth Union can play the role of a bridge between young people and domestic and foreign experts.

"We can build in-depth learning environments in programming, AI, data science... to help the young generation have the capacity to take on great responsibilities in the future," he shared.

An equally important factor is to honor and promote exemplary young people. According to Hieu, this is an effective way to promote the emulation movement and encourage young people to constantly strive. Recognizing and honoring individuals with outstanding achievements will be a strong inspiration, helping us find like-minded people and develop together.

Vietnam is entering a new era – the era of growth. With a clear development orientation, the Party and the State have issued many important policies to promote technology and innovation. One of them is Resolution 57, which aims to turn Vietnam into a technologically powerful country. For the young generation, this is a period full of challenges but also opens up countless opportunities to break through and assert themselves.

The young engineer believes that the younger generation needs to nurture their passion and constantly learn in all fields. Especially in the information technology industry, this is a field that is always changing at a dizzying speed, and those who are slow will easily be left behind. Not only that, creativity and problem-solving ability are key factors that help each individual overcome challenges. He emphasizes the importance of an open mind, willingness to work in a team and accept new ideas from everyone around.

“Young people who are passionate about technology, be ready to adapt, constantly learn and develop yourself. Most importantly, set clear goals and persistently pursue them. Technology is the future, and if you have enough passion and effort, you will find your place in the digital world,” Hoang Khac Hieu sent a message to the young generation of Vietnam.
