Having just harvested the early blooming pink trumpet flowers, Ms. Truong Thi Nga - in Tay Tuu flower village (Bac Tu Liem) said that the flowers were bought by traders at a price of 100,000 - 200,000 VND/bunch (100 flowers), about 50,000 - 70,000 VND higher than the same period last year.
Although the price is quite high, Ms. Nga and many other gardeners are not happy because this year the productivity and quality of flowers have decreased while the investment costs are high and the time to reap the benefits is also prolonged.
“We start planting from August to September of the previous year and harvest in April of the following year. The cost of buying bulbs and fertilizer is about 36 million VND/sao. Not to mention regular watering and lighting to make the flowers bloom evenly. This year, the weather is sometimes cold and sometimes hot, affecting the budding and flowering process. With this 1 sao, after deducting all expenses, we only make a profit of a few million VND,” said Ms. Nga.
Recorded in Mr. Nguyen Tuong Hoa's lily garden - Tay Tuu flower village, the tree also produces uneven flowers, small buds and short stems.
According to Mr. Hoa, the cause is due to the effects of the weather and the land has become infertile due to many years of farming.
“Last year, when the flower season was good, the price was low, but this year, even though the price is good, there aren’t many beautiful flowers to sell, so my income has also decreased,” said Mr. Hoa.
According to Mr. Hoa, because the plants grow unevenly, they must be harvested by picking each branch. In the same bed, there are large and small flowers, so harvesting takes more time.
Ms. Do Thi Hanh - Tay Tuu flower village said that this year, her family has grown 2 sao of lilies. Each day, she harvests over 1,000 flowers, and sells wholesale at a price of 30,000 VND per bunch of 20 flowers.
According to Ms. Hanh, with this price, every year she earns 20 - 25 million VND/sao, but this year the output has decreased by nearly 30% so her income has been halved.
"After 8 months of planting and investing in fertilizers, electricity, water, etc., the income is not commensurate with the effort I put in," said Ms. Hanh.
According to many gardeners in Tay Tuu, lilies are easy to care for, but the harvest time is quite long. The seeds are expensive, on average 1 sao costs more than 20 million VND for bulbs, not to mention other costs.
When harvesting flowers, growers often cut near the base, leaving the bulb as seed for the next crop, so the next crop will save on seed costs.
In recent years, due to continuous production, the land has become infertile, so people in Tay Tu have rented land in Ha Mo commune (Dan Phuong district) to change the farming environment, creating conditions for flowers to grow better.
