Although it increased 10 places compared to 2022, in terms of rankings, Vietnamese passports are still behind passports of some countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Henley Global Index has just released the new quarterly Henley Passport Index 2023 for countries and territories around the world.

According to this result, Singapore citizens continue to own the "most powerful passport in the world".

The new Vietnamese passport (left) has the same size and number of pages as the old passport.

Only this country achieved 192 points, equivalent to citizens of the "lion island" being able to visit 192 countries and territories without a visa. It is known that in the rankings of many different organizations, the Singapore passport has maintained the top position for many years.

Second place went to Germany, Italy and Spain. These three countries all scored 190 points. Next up were Austria, Finland, France, Japan, Luxembourg (a country in Western Europe, bordering France, Germany, Belgium), South Korea and Sweden. These countries all scored 189 points, tying for third place.

In Southeast Asia, the Malaysian passport has the second highest ranking (after Singapore), with 180 points, ranking 11th. Brunei ranks 20th, with 166 points. Thailand scores 79 points, ranking 64th. Indonesia ranks 69th, with 73 points. The Philippines ranks 74th, with 66 points.

Meanwhile, Vietnam scored 55 points, ranking 82nd, the same as Cambodia. Compared to the end of 2022, when it was ranked 92nd, the current ranking of Vietnam's passport has increased by 10 places.

With this score, Vietnamese passport holders can travel to 55 destinations and territories around the world without a visa or only need an e-visa or visa on arrival.

However, compared with other countries in the Southeast Asian region, Vietnam is only "higher" than Laos (ranked 87th) and Myanmar (ranked 89th).

With the aim of attracting international tourists to boost socio-economic development, the Vietnamese National Assembly recently passed the Law on Amendments and Supplements to a number of Articles of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens and the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners. The Law takes effect from August 15.

Accordingly, the visa duration is increased from 30 days to 90 days, valid for multiple entries. In addition, the National Assembly also agreed to increase the temporary residence period at the border gate for people entering under unilateral visa exemption from 15 days to 45 days.

It is known that some countries in the region such as Thailand, Singapore... are applying visa exemption policies with temporary stays of up to 45 days, 90 days.

On the other hand, the world's "weakest" passport still belongs to Afghanistan. Its citizens are allowed to travel to 27 countries and territories without a visa. Next are the passports of Iraq and Syria, ranked 102nd and 101st with 29 and 30 points respectively.

New features of ordinary passports with electronic chips

From March 1, Vietnamese citizens will be issued ordinary passports with electronic chips. This type of passport has higher information security than regular paper passports, avoiding the risk of having the personal information of the holder stolen.
