Coach Van Sy Son: 'V-League needs to test players for doping'

VnExpressVnExpress09/05/2024

Quang Nam After the incident of five Ha Tinh players being arrested for drug use, Coach Van Sy Son said that doping testing in the V-League needs to be increased.

Yesterday, Ha Tinh Provincial Police announced the arrest of 10 people for organizing and illegally using drugs on May 4 at a hotel in Ha Tinh City. Among them were five players from Ha Tinh Club: midfielder Dinh Thanh Trung, midfielder Nguyen Trung Hoc, goalkeeper Duong Quang Tuan, center back Nguyen Ngoc Thang and defender Nguyen Van Truong.

Except for Van Truong, who is on the youth team, the remaining players are or have been pillars of Ha Tinh - the team competing in V-League 2023-2024.

On the same afternoon, the Disciplinary Board of the Vietnam Football Federation decided to indefinitely ban the above-mentioned group of players from competing. This means that they are not allowed to participate in any VFF tournaments until a replacement decision is made.

After the 2-0 victory over Hanoi Police in round 17, Quang Nam coach Van Sy Son said that to prevent similar situations, professional football organizations in Vietnam need to test players for doping. "A few years ago, professional football tested players for doping, but the V-League has not yet done so," said Mr. Son. "I think the VFF and the tournament's organizing committee need to act immediately to prevent players from using banned substances. If clear regulations are put in place, when detected during testing, whoever is at fault will be held responsible."

Mr. Son is very strict with players. In early 2024, he disciplined young striker Nguyen Dinh Bac, transferring him to the youth team for training for violating discipline. The former left-back of the Vietnamese national team believes that, in addition to professional training, players need to be aware of their profession because no one can follow them forever. According to the coach from Nghe An, if you want a professional football environment, the first thing is that players must be professional. "Football is a profession that makes a lot of money. If you play well and become a star, players will be greatly respected and worshiped. Therefore, they must be aware and self-conscious about their profession. They must keep themselves from all temptations and harmful games," he said, adding that to stay away from social evils, players need to improve themselves, first of all, they must be good children to their parents, good husbands to their wives and exemplary and responsible fathers to their children.

Before the Ha Tinh incident, Vietnamese football had witnessed many scandals related to banned substances. In 2004, young player Nguyen Van Y was expelled from SLNA for theft and drug addiction. Three years later, SLNA U19 captain Luu Van Hien and Nguyen Hong Viet were caught red-handed injecting drugs in their private room. That same year, midfielder Nguyen Xuan Thanh of Hanoi ACB was arrested and prosecuted for illegally possessing dozens of ecstasy pills while preparing to use them at a nightclub in Hanoi. In 2008, five players of Hanoi T&T (the predecessor of Hanoi FC) were caught red-handed using ecstasy at a hotel in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Mr. Son, players are also human beings, the management role of the club and the coaching board is very important but it is not possible to be closely monitored at all times and places, the most important thing is still self-awareness. "I repeat, doping test is the best solution because the leaders of the teams and the coaching board cannot always follow the players closely to take attendance. Therefore, if there are strict measures, the players will definitely be afraid, the environment will be different because most Vietnamese players are good players, coming from poverty," he emphasized.

In addition to the punishment for the Ha Tinh players, yesterday VFF sent a dispatch to professional clubs requesting them to coordinate with authorities to strengthen management and education of players on the harmful effects of addictive substances and to comply with legal regulations. They called on clubs to proactively inspect, detect, and prevent acts of using banned substances, and to proactively coordinate with VFF and security agencies to participate in prevention.
