Vietnam team reshapes left wing

In this training session of the Vietnamese national team, coach Kim Sang-sik has left out a series of familiar names associated with the role of left wingback.

Except for Van Hau and Tuan Tai who were injured, Jason Quang Vinh who did not have time to complete the procedures to become a Vietnamese citizen, Bui Van Duc (The Cong Viettel), Nguyen Van Duc (Hanoi Police Club), and Vo Minh Trong (Binh Duong Club) were all absent due to professional reasons.

This shows that after the tests, coach Kim Sang-sik has selected the candidates that he thinks are most suitable for the playing style he wants to build at the AFF Cup 2024.

Truong Tien Anh has 1 goal and 3 assists this season.

In the list of 30 people gathering on November 21, Mr. Kim only called up 2 names capable of playing left wing, the duo of players from Viettel The Cong Club, Khuat Van Khang and Truong Tien Anh.

This is a very small number compared to the large number of players on the opposite right wing including Xuan Manh, Van Thanh, Tan Tai, Tien Anh and even Hai Long if needed.

Waiting for additional resources from Nam Dinh Club

Truong Tien Anh is a rather special case. At the age of 18, the player born in 1999 was in the plan of the Vietnam U.20 team before being eliminated at the last minute by coach Hoang Anh Tuan on the eve of the 2017 U.20 World Cup in Korea.

Coach Kim Sang-sik will renew the left wing of the Vietnam national team.

Under coach Philippe Troussier, Tien Anh was one of the players that the French coach valued, experimenting with playing on both wings and playing the role of left back in a friendly match with the Palestine team.

However, a right-footed player like Tien Anh will not easily adapt to the left wing, so at the moment Khuat Van Khang is almost the only suitable candidate for this position. The player born in 2003 is currently playing in the starting lineup at The Cong Viettel Club with 2 goals and 1 assist.

It will be worth waiting for Mr. Kim to use Tien Anh (1 goal, 3 assists for Viettel The Cong Club). But remember, the Vietnam team will still have another round of reinforcements when Nam Dinh Club finishes playing 2 matches in AFC Champions League 2 against Lee Man (November 27) and Bangkok United (December 4).

Hong Duy is being heavily used by coach Kim Sang-sik in the last 2 matches.

Nam Dinh FC still has two players who excel at left-back, Nguyen Phong Hong Duy and Nguyen Van Vi. Hong Duy is very experienced, having started in the last two matches of the Vietnam team against India (1-1 draw) and Thailand (1-2 loss).

During his time playing for Hanoi FC, Van Vi was also called up to the Vietnam national team by coach Park Hang-seo. This season, he played 9 times in the V-League, including 4 starting matches, scoring 1 goal and 2 assists.

With these candidates, coach Kim Sang-sik will proactively select additional players for the Vietnamese team before flying to Laos on December 6, preparing for the opening match of the 2024 AFF Cup against the host team Laos on December 9.
