Ter Stegen returns after more than half a year of treatment. |
In an interview with BILD magazine on April 2, Ter Stegen shared about his time recovering from a persistent injury. He said: “The first thing I felt when I got injured was a pain in my thigh. The pain spread throughout my body. When I looked down at my leg, I knew immediately that it was not just a thigh problem. My knee was in a completely different position than usual. It was clear that it could not go back to the right place on its own."
Ter Stegen suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in September 2024. The German goalkeeper was expected to miss the rest of the 2024/25 season. However, he was able to return to training last week. Ter Stegen's treatment and recovery process is also progressing well.
"Right now, I feel healthy and full of energy. I have a great team around me, who can handle any pressure. I'm looking forward to playing soon, although there's no specific return date yet," Ter Stegen added.
When asked about Ter Stegen's ability to return in the coming weeks, coach Hansi Flick said: "We have to evaluate step by step. The good news is that he is in good shape. Everything is going smoothly. But at the moment no decision has been made."
Ter Stegen's return has left Barcelona's coaching staff in a dilemma. The Catalan club are also pleased with Wojciech Szczesny's form and are preparing to extend his contract. Coach Flick is looking to create competition between Szczesny and Ter Stegen.
Barcelona's trust in both Szczesny and Ter Stegen has forced third-choice goalkeeper Inaki Pena to find a new destination.
