On May 25, social networking forums shared images of the 2022-2023 school year closing ceremony and the 2019-2023 graduation ceremony for grade 9 students of Mao Khe 2 Secondary School (Dong Trieu town, Quang Ninh). The ceremony was considered "grand" when the venue was not in the familiar school yard but took place at an event center with a splendidly decorated stage, dozens of banquet tables like a wedding.
Besides the opinion that the school has organized a meaningful and unique year-end ceremony, many people have expressed disagreement and said that is it a waste for the school to organize such a grand and lavish year-end ceremony? Will the organization costs be put entirely on the parents? Will families of students with difficult circumstances be pressured by the school's generosity?
Speaking to VOV2, Ms. Tran Thi Anh Tuyet, Principal of Mao Khe 2 Secondary School, confirmed that the images shared on social media were indeed the school's year-end activities. However, unlike speculations on social media, Ms. Tuyet said that the school held the year-end ceremony at an event center because the school's campus was too small while the number of students was over 1,300.
"This is not the first year the school has organized the year-end ceremony at the event center. In the context of a cramped school space, a large number of students, and hot weather, organizing the year-end ceremony at the event center is very convenient. The location is less than 100 meters from the school, the school only needs to focus on the content and does not need to worry about the logistics of the backdrop, seating, lighting...", Ms. Tuyet said.
Regarding the cost of organizing the Year-End Ceremony, Ms. Tuyet said that the cost of organizing it is not up to hundreds of millions as rumored on social networking sites. The total cost of renting the location, backdrop, lighting... is only about 12 million VND.
"However, the event center fully covered the cost for the school. Because the owner of this center also had children studying at the school before, he created favorable conditions for the school to organize. At the same time, the school did not collect any money from parents for this event. Parents only sponsored or supported the awards given to excellent students and students with difficult circumstances," Ms. Tran Thi Anh Tuyet explained.
The principal of Mao Khe 2 Secondary School also said that although the ceremony was held at an event center, the process of the year-end ceremony was the same as when held at school. In the ceremony schedule, the school did not organize a party for students. However, if any class's parents organized a private party, the school would respect it and not intervene, only recommending to ensure food safety and hygiene.
"The year-end ceremony was very solemn and meaningful. Students, parents and teachers were all happy and moved after the end of the school year, especially the 9th graders. I was a bit sad when I read some negative and incorrect comments about the school's year-end event," Ms. Tuyet shared.
