Accordingly, the host country Thailand has prepared 27 bicycles, purchased 18 new helmets, 18 pairs of competition shoes and 18 pairs of pedals. Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh - Head of High Performance Sports Department I said that Vietnam urgently coordinated to fix the bicycle fire incident and received positive feedback from the host country.
The Vietnamese cycling team arrived in Thailand on February 5. About 30 of the team's specialized racing bikes burned down while being transported to the competition venue. The Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation confirmed this information.
The transport vehicle involved in the accident - which resulted in the loss of all the competition equipment of the Vietnamese team - was a vehicle arranged by the organizing committee to transport them.
The reason why the truck caught fire is still unknown. However, the number of vehicles and equipment that the Vietnamese cycling team lost was quite large. Among them, there were athletes competing in 2 events, so they had to bring 2 specialized vehicles to compete.
Regarding the compensation method, the organizing committee and the Asian Cycling Federation will meet and discuss the compensation method with the General Secretary of the Vietnam Cycling and Motor Sports Federation - Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu.
" Some specialized bicycles used for individual time trials are worth up to VND250 million each, including those of racers Nguyen Tuan Vu and Nguyen Thi Thu Mai. The remaining bicycles, including that of athlete Nguyen Thi That, are also worth no less than VND150 million ," said a representative of the Vietnam Motorcycling Federation.
Despite having new equipment for the competition, the Vietnamese cycling team will face many disadvantages. The athletes only have one evening to get used to the bikes and pedals before the start of the race.
